You may have noticed it's been a little quiet over here at Haft Vadi. And it's not just because Dharlene is a bellydancing librarian... Well, actually, it is.

She's out of the country for six months volunteering at the library at the Baha'i World Centre. So, keep your groove on and look for a short but sweet summer session to get announced in the late spring! (Haifa folk, we shall dance soon!)

Unfortunately, due to lack of registration, the remainder of Anne's Thursday evening multilevel belly dance classes will be cancelled. Anyone who has paid for these remaining class will be refunded their remaining balances.

A sweet glimpse into the artsy life of our lovely Anne Vermeyden!

Today's photo is Anne's pick!

Anne picked this photo because it is personal and special to her. The time spent rehearsing and practising this play has given Anne the opportunity to learn about different Levantine traditions. She also was able to practise her Arabic comprehension, listening, and speaking skills.What Anne particularly enjoyed was the tradition of Zaghareet.

Zaghrota (ululation) is a way to express joy and happiness. It is a long high pitched vocalization done by emitting a loud voice accompanied with a rapid back and forth movement of the tongue. Women of the Levant and Northern Africa practice Zaghrota at weddings and different celebrations. It can also be a form of protest and a way of expressing solidarity and resiliency in case of death or imprisonment.

Zaghrota was a part of the rituals practised by polytheist nations inhabiting the Levant to ask for rain, mercy etc... Also it was practised as a war cry to motivate the fighting men before battles.

Anne perfected her Zaghrota during rehearsals.
