JOURNAL ENTRY: We fished Bob's Lake on the weekend in our kayaks. Bob's Lake is about an hour from Kingston in Frontenac County. We arrived at 7am and paddled from the public boat launch across the lake and into Buck Bay casting along the way. While the day started off with water like glass, the wind picked up during the day and made for a bit of a tiring and challenging paddle back. It was hot too at approximately 30 degrees Celsius.
Our gear for the day consisted of spinning rods and baitcasters mainly running braided line with fluro leaders. For lures, I like using a combination of wacky rigged senkos on custom dressed hooks or micro / finesse bucktail jigs that I tie myself. My fishing partner has fallen in love with his sweet Sweet Beaver's, as well as various rigs including tackle from Great Lakes Finesse. The two of us will often use different baits and fish in different depths to cover lots of water. So far, our results seem similar with our unique set-ups.
The wind made for challenging conditions as the day went on. The full moon the night before may have also affected the bite, but we had to earn our fish. We caught a combination of small mouth and large mouth bass, but not as frequently as in earlier weeks in different lakes. We found that Buck Bay probably wasn't worth the paddle due to shallow and windy conditions nearest Bob's Lake.
The highlight catch of the day was probably a beefier bass caught on my new short Shimano spinning rod with a hand-tied pink bucktail jig in somewhat deeper water. With the light equipment, the fight felt epic, and I was relieved to get the bass in the boat as a few other people were now watching from other boats as the fish was jumping and my line kept running. It made the long day worth it. My fishing partner caught a handful of bass too in search of number for his involvement in the Kingston Kayak and Canoe Fishing Club's month long bass tournament.
I realize it's been a while since I've updated this page. I've finally started kayak fishing regularly again so hope to continue with reviews of our lake adventures and gear insights. Thanks for sticking around. Might do a name change for this page too so more to come.
