What are the benefits of restorative yoga?

In a world of "busyness" we may often forget the importance of rest. As a yoga teacher, I am always a student (therefore, always learning😊). There is wisdom in our bodies and if we slow down and listen to what they are telling us, answers are revealed.
Restorative yoga is a the practice of of allowing our bodies to come to complete relaxation. It is practiced by holding poses (usually for several minutes) with the use of props to completely support us. Now, don't be fooled by this, this can be VERY challenging for many of us to do (myself included😉) as we are so often told that "busy" is the right way to be and rest is not a valued need in our culture. But, I encourage you to find the beauty and benefits in rest.
Taking time for ourselves to rest can be a challenge. Much like in restorative poses, it takes a few minutes for our brains-then bodies-to get the message that "this is good for me", which then allows our bodies to completely surrender to the rest. Here are some benefits:
-Deeply relaxes the body.
-Stills a busy mind.
-Releases muscular tension, improving mobility and flexibility.
-Improves capacity for healing and balancing.
-Balances the nervous system.
-Boosts the immune system.
-Develops qualities of compassion and understanding toward others and self.
