🌟 The other day, I heard someone ask, "Why don't kids do drills anymore?" Well, today I want to shed some light on this topic and provide some insights. Let's explore the shift towards coaching kids through games and why it's gaining momentum. 🧒⚽️

It's true that the traditional emphasis on drills has seen a shift in recent years. While drills remain valuable, there is a growing recognition of the benefits of incorporating purposeful games and play into coaching methodologies. Specially in kids under 12 years old.

The approach has evolved to prioritize purposeful games that engage young athletes on a whole new level. Here's why this shift has taken place and why it's making a positive impact. 🧒⚽️

✅ Engaging Learning: Purposeful games capture children's attention like nothing else! By incorporating challenges, strategy, and friendly competition, kids become active participants in their own development. They learn critical thinking, decision-making, and adaptability, all while having a blast.

✅ Skill Transfer: Purposeful games naturally create dynamic situations where kids encounter different scenarios. They learn to apply their skills in real-time, adapting to changing conditions and reacting on their feet. These skills are transferrable to match situations, making them more confident and effective players.

✅ Social Development: Purposeful games bring children together, fostering teamwork and communication. They learn to cooperate, support each other, and embrace diversity. These invaluable life skills extend far beyond the field, shaping them into well-rounded individuals.

Here are some negative points about drills with players under 12.

❌Lack of Context: Drills often focus on isolated skills, detached from the actual game.

❌Kids might struggle to see the practical application of these skills in a real game situation, limiting their understanding and transferability.

❌ Monotonous Repetition: The repetitive nature of drills can become monotonous for kids, potentially dampening their enthusiasm and passion for the sport. It's essential to balance repetition with engaging and dynamic activities.

❌ Limited Decision-Making: Drills typically involve predetermined actions, leaving little room for decision-making and creativity. Kids may not develop the ability to make quick decisions in unpredictable game scenarios, affecting their adaptability on the field.

But let's not forget, coaching through games still requires a focus on soccer skills objectives and player development. It's not about just giving the game or instructions and then leaving or watching from the sidelines. It's vital that coaches provide guided teaching and not just supervision. Otherwise, it would be no different than someone merely supervising a recess. 🎯⚽️
