We finished up our after-school Junior Golf program this week. We had 66 kids registered and tons of laughs over our 5 weeks of golf.
First off, I would like to congratulate Cala Korman for winning the 2023 Nextgen Prairie Championship last week at Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin, SK. This is a 3-day event with some of the best juniors around from Ontario to BC. She was 2 strokes down going into her final round and she shot the best round in the tournament a 1 under par 71 to win the tournament by 3 strokes! She is one of the top junior golfers in province and helping put KLGC on the map for her success in the competitive tournaments she takes part in all summer long. She is out practicing almost every evening. If you see her on the course, make sure to congratulate her!
I would like to thank the volunteers, without their help this would never have been possible. Brendon McFarlane, Cody Shackel, Ashton Cuvelier and Brett Warbeck were our main teachers over the 5 weeks of golf. We had plenty of other volunteers that were very needed as well. Thanks to everyone that came out to help! Keeping 60 kids in line and not hitting each other with golf clubs is a task for sure. We managed to go 5 weeks without a single kid crying and not a single complaint other than not having enough water balloons!
Thank you very much to Clint Gudnason for volunteering to drive a school bus each week to drop off a bus load of kids at KLGC. This makes things 100x easier and we really appreciate it!
Thank you to Boundary Co-op for providing weekly snacks and drinks. This is easily one of the main highlights when we get to take a break each week. You guys are an awesome part of our community. They provided everything for our wind up as well. Hot dogs, buns, drinks and freezies for all 66 kids we had out!
For our windup we had Clint drop all the kids off at the driving range. We attempted to try a couple different games with water balloons but that lasted all of 2 minutes. We proceeded to have a water balloon fight with our 1000 balloons. They only lasted 20-25 minutes at most. We made the trek back to the clubhouse and cooled down with a freezie before ending the day with hot dogs and drinks.
This is a ton of fun to run our junior golf program. I will do my best to find time to get a junior tournament organized this summer and will try to get a junior match play style league going for the high school kids.
I would love to pass this program onto another group in the future if anyone is willing to take it over. If no one steps up I will make sure this program continues as it is a crucial part of our community to keep the next generation interested in golf.
Thanks,
Brett Warbeck
