Remember, while wild camping is technically illegal in Italy (and can lead to fines), many adventurers find that if you leave no trace, set up camp late, and break camp early, you're often left undisturbed. 🌿⛺ Just be mindful, respect the land, and help preserve this magical place for future explorers! 💚

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬

We might be stating the obvious here, but the best way to prepare for a long-distance hike is to start walking as many kilometers as possible. In general, it’s recommended to start training at least 4 months before your hike. But if you're starting from scratch, there are some extra things to keep in mind. Let’s start at the beginning!

𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝-𝐔𝐩 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐲
The key to building endurance and strength is a gradual approach. Rushing into long distances too quickly can lead to injuries and burnout, so take it step by step. Start with a distance you feel comfortable with—this will vary depending on your fitness level. For example, try walking 7.5 km three times per week, and gradually increase your distance.

A good rule of thumb is to take a rest week every three weeks. During this time, you can still walk, but cut down your distances to allow your body to recover. After the rest week, continue increasing the distance. This way, you’ll build stamina without overloading your body.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤
A long hike isn’t just about your legs—it’s also about your ability to carry weight. Once you’ve gotten into a walking rhythm, start adding your hiking backpack into the mix. Start light and gradually add more weight until you're carrying a load similar to what you'll bring on your hike. This helps your body adjust and prepares you for the extra strain on your back and shoulders. Make sure the pack is fitted properly to avoid unnecessary pain or discomfort.

Your feet are going to do a lot of work, so invest in the right footwear. Choose shoes or boots that are designed for the type of terrain you’ll be hiking. Whether it’s rocky trails or forest paths, proper footwear is key to avoiding blisters and other foot problems. And don’t forget to break them in before the big day—wear them on your training hikes to make sure they’re comfortable and ready for action.

Sure, water is important on hikes... but let's be real, coffee is LIFE. 😅

No adventure is complete without a little caffeine boost, and I never hit the trail without my trusty Italian moka pot. There’s nothing better than kicking off the boots, brewing a fresh cup, and enjoying that well-earned moment of pure bliss. 🔥💆‍♀️

Who needs wilderness survival skills when you’ve got a moka pot, right? 😎☕️

Hiking Tip 1: Bring Coffee! It's as simple as that.

The Pieterspad (LAW9) may not offer rugged wilderness, but it’s packed with charm and character. Covering 498 km from Pieterburen near the Wadden Sea all the way to St. Pietersberg in Maastricht (or vice versa), this iconic trail crosses the entire country from north to south, weaving through farmlands, forests, and some of the most picturesque villages the Netherlands has to offer.

Starting at the quiet shores of the Wadden Sea in Groningen and ending at the iconic St. Pietersberg in Limburg, the Pieterspad leads you through a patchwork of farmlands, forests, and quaint villages. It’s a journey that celebrates the beauty of the Dutch countryside, one step at a time.
