When we work in a one-on-one setting we are often doing more than just teaching Pilates, especially when we are consistently teaching the same people.
It’s really common to get to know clients more intimately, to start to really care about them, to exchange energy as more than just a teacher and client, to support each other, cheer for each other and confide in each other.
Over my years of teaching, some clients didn’t align with me or my teaching style and didn’t come back to me, some stayed with me for short seasons, some for longer seasons and some have been with me since the beginning. Virtually all of my clients whether short or long term have impacted me in my teaching career.
Everyone has a story and many things going on in their lives outside of doing Pilates and in my various trainings I have learned about “holding space,” it wasn’t until I actually started forming bonds with my clients that I truly understood what that meant.
Sometimes connection happens beyond the exercises, beyond the equipment. Connection happens when there is trust, when there is space to speak and have someone listen, when movement can happen without judgement.
Sometimes it’s simply being a safe place for someone to show up exactly as they are that day. To be seen, supported, celebrated and reminded that they don’t have to have everything figured out before they walk through the door.
I think that is one of the most beautiful parts of teaching in such an intimate way. We may be working with a client’s body but along the way we often get to know a little piece of their heart and they get to know a little piece of ours too 🤍
