New Import restrictions from the US

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 – 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬
There is currently an outbreak of New World screwworm (NWS) in the United States (U.S.). caused by the larvae of the New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax).
The following U.S. states have confirmed detections of NWS and are subject to CFIA import restrictions:
Arizona (date of confirmation: October 31st, 2026)
New Mexico (date of confirmation: September 17, 2026)
Texas (date of confirmation: June 03, 2026)
𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐖𝐒 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
Equidae (horses, mules and other equines)
Suidae (pigs and wild boar)
Bovinae (cattle, bison and water buffalo)
Caprinae (sheep and goats)
Cervidae (deer, elk, moose, caribou and reindeer)
Camelidae (llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, guanacos, and Bactrian camels)

𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬
Importation into Canada is prohibited for the affected animal species, regardless of the purpose of import (including, but not limited to, breeding, competition, sale, or slaughter).
𝐔.𝐒. 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬
Importation of affected animal species is permitted provided the animals have not resided in or transited through an affected state within 21 days before export to Canada and meet all other applicable import conditions.
𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬
Canadian animals returning to Canada are prohibited from entering if they have resided in or travelled through an affected U.S. state within 21 days before returning to Canada.
Before returning to Canada, the animals must be moved to a non-affected U.S. state and remain there for at least 21 days and must meet all other applicable import conditions.
