As breast cancer survivors, our greatest hope is that our children and grandchildren will not have to endure the same disease, treatments, and side effects as we did. But we also want to demonstrate that you can continue being active and leading a full life after a breast cancer diagnosis. The young lady who wrote this piece is graduating from grade 7 this afternoon. The positive influence of her grandmother is certainly evident in her writing. Every dragon boat festival that the Spirit Warriors enter contains a Carnation Ceremony that recognizes the breast cancer survivors who are paddling, those survivors who cheer us on, and the sisters we have lost to the disease. While numerous dragon boat teams consist of survivors and supporters, the Spirit Warriors team is made up entirely of breast cancer survivors. This makes our achievements particularly special to us. 🌸🐲🎀

Our first festival of the 2026 season was on Saturday June 20th in Salmon Arm. Mother Nature made her presence known as high winds made for very wavy conditions. After a 90 minute delay and a reorganization of the race course, the festival got underway much to the delight of both our new and experienced paddlers. Our team did so well in our three races and placed a very close third place finish in the Ladies B division.

SPIRIT WARRIORS - We will be sharing a booth this year at the Canada Day festivities at Riverside Park with the other teams from our Kamloops’ paddling community. Volunteers are needed to help throughout the day. Please let Joyce know your availability ASAP and no later than June 26th. Members of the three Kamloops’ dragon boat teams have joined together to form a composite team to compete at the Okanagan Super Sprints in Penticton this weekend. We know “The Triple Dippers” will represent our city well!

In these last few weeks, we have encouraged other breast cancer survivors to try the sport of dragon boating. These four ladies have decided to join the team.
