Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your patience and support as we get 867 Strength off the ground. Since our pre-registration callout last fall, a lot has happened (and changed)—and we want to share some updates with you.
First off, thank you to everyone who pre-registered in fall 2024. Because of you, we were able to show funders that Iqaluit is hungry for more fitness and movement opportunities. Your response helped us secure a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation, which went toward purchasing and shipping equipment to Iqaluit. This same grant is also helping us support coach development and certification—expanding the capacity of our team right here at home.
Originally, our proposal focused on opening a gym facility in Iqaluit. While that’s still the dream, we’ve had to pivot our strategy. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the support we’d hoped for from the some local companies, who saw us as competition. So instead of waiting—we’re adapting.
For the next year or two, we’re going all-in on youth and young adult programming: clinics, workshops, and school weight room training. Our dream is to work alongside existing sports organizations as their off-ice, off-mat, off-court training partner of choice. We're especially excited about our push to get certified coaches into schools running weight room classes after school.
Already, we’re confirmed to work with:
Judo Nunavut – running strength classes for their young female athletes
Nunavut Fury Hockey – supporting athlete development this season
If you work or volunteer with a local sports organization, we’d love to connect and help train your athletes in 2025–2026.

While we haven’t opened a facility yet, we’re still chasing that dream—just by a different route.
Needs: Humbly we ask for help securing a seacan for our belongings that are arriving on the sealift. We have money for it, but are having trouble tracking one down.
Big Picture Goal: We’re not stopping at Iqaluit. Our long-term vision is to bring this type of strength and fitness programming to every community in Nunavut. We want to be the organization that helps schools access funding, upgrade their weight rooms, and train local coaches—so youth across the territory have the same opportunities to move, grow, and get stronger.
We believe this is possible through collaborative funding efforts like the Arctic Inspiration Prize, and we’re actively pursuing that path. If you work in a school, live in a Nunavut community, or know someone who’d be excited about this vision—we want to hear from you. Let’s make strength training accessible across the North.
Thank you again for believing in us. We're just getting started.
With strength,
The 867 Strength Team
