Topic - how to settle down your stress response.
If this isn't of interest or something that you are looking for - move on.
Social media just to scroll isn't doing any of us any favours.
But - many people are in sympathetic states (fight or flight) most of the time and it sucks.
I have a chronic complex health situation to contend with and getting my nervous system on my side is paramount and the key to making any diet, supplement or medication be effective.
Believe me when I tell you that anyone dealing with chronic illness is struggling and our medical system is really great with acute situations, can be quite miraculous with surgery and does the day to day stuff like a broken arm or stitching up an injury with great results.
No offence, but they SUCK at chronic illness. What is often missed
is that nervous system regulation is the key to success along with protocols, diets or whatever else will move the needle.
Functional medicine is getting very close to allopathic medicine. Test and prescribe. Sometimes with a sledgehammer. Here are 80 capsules a day - all the best. We'll retest and see how that's going for you.
Alternative and integrative practices can be very helpful but in my case, have proven to be soothing in the moment.
So.........
What does brain retraining look like?
Here is an example of a short excerpt by Catherine King DPT from her program Primal Trust.
Your Daily Pearl
Your limbic system (brain/nervous system) is just trying to protect you. But if you can show your brain that real safety comes from meeting your needs rather than self-abandoning, people-pleasing, and overworking, it learns that there's a different kind of protection available.
Instead of staying stuck in vigilance and stress, which is one way your system tries to protect you, you actually meet your underlying needs. That's real protection.
Your Truth Telling Mantra
"The protection I need is feeling my needs and meeting them."
Back to me......
So - if you sit quietly for a few minutes and ask yourself, what does my body/being need today, what comes up?
- a cup of tea
- some time out to read a book
- connect with a friend
- go for a walk
- lie down
- watch a program that makes you laugh out loud
- have an epson salt bath
- a massage
- a heating pad
- ????
Little bits of "safe" time every day add up.
A lot of people with chronic complex health issues look great when you see them at the grocery store. Typically we are "out" when we are at our best or have managed to "perk ourselves up" to engage in something like what we hope our life can feel like. Or just to get the basics done. It isn't all doom and gloom but it is a challenging journey that can make a great deal of progress with nervous system regulation and brain retraining.
