Yesterday over 350 members of the Taylor Statten community gathered on the shores of Canoe Lake to celebrate the life of Linda “Lecko” Leckie. Lecko embodied the very best of Ahmek and Wapomeo. From her days as a camper to her decades of service as a paddler, educator, mentor, and volunteer, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to the camps and the people who call them home.
She helped strengthen our canoeing traditions as an accomplished paddler, supported generations of campers through swimming instruction and certifications, and gave countless hours of her time to ensure others could experience the magic of Algonquin. More than anything, she led through kindness, quiet confidence and a unwavering commitment to community.
We were honoured to host her Rendevous and welcome so many people whose lives she touched. Seeing the Ahmek dining hall filled was a remarkable and moving tribute - a space overflowing with love, gratitude and reverence for a woman who left an indelible mark on generations of campers, staff and friends. The gathering was a powerful reminder of the extraordinary impact one person can have and of the enduring strength and spirit of the Taylor Statten Community.
Lecko’s legacy lives on in every paddle stroke across Canoe Lake, every lesson on the swim dock, every trip into Algonquin and every friendship formed around camp. Her spirit is woven into the fabric of Ahmek and Wapomeo and will continue to inspire generations to come. And when faced with a challenge, decision, or an opportunity to help others, we will carry her example forward by asking ourselves a simple question: “What would Lecko do?”
Thank you Lecko for showing us what it means to give back, to lead with humility and to care deeply for others. Your legacy is not something we simply remember - it is something we will carry forward. And when we ask ourselves, “What would Lecko do?” we know your example will continue to guide us for generations to come.
