This will be a long one.
Normally when I post a photo like this, I write a long caption explaining the spiritual relationship those of us who live the “Field to Table” lifestyle have with the animals we hunt. And how photos like this represent a memory of an event, an accomplishment we are proud of. But honestly, because of how much this photo means to me, because of the memories, I don’t feel like writing a caption like that this time.
So in lieu of that explanation, please scroll on if you feel “hate” or “jealousy” when you see this photo.
For the rest of you who have followed along on my long journey, some of you for nearly 40 years, since the day I wrote my first outdoor magazine article, here is a photo of my 2022 whitetail buck.
Near as I can calculate, during this fall’s Saskatchewan hunting season, I spent close to 250 hours over the course of 36 days waiting on stand for this particular buck. It wasn’t about “meat,” and it wasn’t about “antlers” for me, it was about setting a nearly impossible goal to ensure I would be able to sit quietly on stand reminiscing, enjoying watching deer and being in nature, for the entire season.
I knew this buck well. I have many trail camera photos of him from the last three years, and during that time, he has only shown up on camera in daylight four times! So I decided to wait for this buck only…because the odds were so low of actually seeing him. And truthfully, if this buck had never shown up in daylight, I would have been just as happy ending the season “deerless” as I am now, sharing this photo with all of you.
I was sitting in the stand we call the “Family Stand” when this buck finally made a mistake. It is a stand that this buck has NEVER shown up at during daylight.
Our daughter Eva has taken a buck on this stand, as well as our son Branlin, my cousin Guy, Cody Robbins, and Louise’s father Len.
My own father, Hal, took the last buck of his life on this stand. His ashes are spread around this stand.
50 years ago, I took my first whitetail buck with my father standing by my side.
He was by my side again when this buck showed up.
