A huge thank you to the KSSL (Kawartha Soccer League) for their incredible support of this year's Robert Freeland Memorial Tournament!

This past year, KSSL generously donated the equivalent of three hours of field rental time, which made a significant impact in helping us keep the tournament running.

Since our inaugural tournament in 2022, KSSL has consistently supported us by entering at least four teams every single year. Their continued commitment has played a major role in the growth and success of our event, and we truly can't thank them enough.

If you're looking to join a team or sign up as an individual player, KSSL offers both summer and winter leagues with a fun, welcoming, and competitive environment for players of all skill levels.

A huge thank you to the Toronto Maple Leafs for their incredible generosity and support of this year’s Robert Freeland Memorial Tournament.

One of this year’s recipients, Waylon, is a passionate hockey player and a huge Maple Leafs fan. Unfortunately, he had to miss this past hockey season while undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Through Steven Merkley from Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni Relations, the Maple Leafs generously donated a signed William Nylander jersey, along with a certificate of authenticity. Waylon was absolutely overjoyed to receive such a special gift, and his reaction in the video says more than words ever could.

From all of us at the Robert Freeland Memorial Tournament, thank you to Steven, William Nylander, and the entire Toronto Maple Leafs organization for creating such a special memory for Waylon and his family. We truly appreciate your generosity and hope this is the beginning of a lasting relationship as we continue supporting families in our community.

We’re also thrilled to share that Waylon’s treatment has been going very well, and we’re all hopeful to see him back on the ice this upcoming season.

T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY 👕⚽️

June 29, 2022.

This date will always hold a special place in our hearts. It's the day "Robbie Free/Freelander/Mr. Freeland" said his final goodbye.

As many of you know—or have come to learn—Robert loved gatherings of any kind. He loved the way a full room or event could bring people together. He loved hearing about people's life experiences or simply sharing stories from his own day. He was the kind of man who could put a smile on anyone's face—even if it was just by asking about the oranges you were buying at the grocery store.

And with Robert's love for gatherings came his love of food. He would try just about anything, but he had a special place in his heart for KFC chicken. It was the place he'd "sneak" an after-work snack before heading home to a home-cooked meal. 🫣🤣

Every year on this day, we grab a bucket of KFC and share our favourite memories of Robert. It's one small way we keep his memory alive and close to our hearts. As you can see in the photo above, he enjoyed his KFC just about anywhere—even on the beach in Clearwater, Florida!

Today, I challenge you to grab yourself some KFC chicken, snap a photo, and share it with us! Whether you're on your back deck, at the dining room table, on your boat, or even in your car, we'd love to see it. Post your photo in the comments below or send it to us in a direct message if that's more comfortable. Every person who submits a photo will be entered to win a Robert Freeland Memorial T-shirt. We can't wait to see all of your photos. Have a finger-lickin' good time! 🍗❤️

**Winner will be drawn on July 6th**

Wow — what a success the 5th Annual Robert Freeland Memorial Tournament was!

Five years ago, this started as something very simple — a way to bring people together for someone who meant everything to us.

Our dad, Robert Freeland, was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma in 2021. If you knew him, you knew how much he loved sports, community, and bringing people together. During the final stages of his life, we wanted to give him moments of joy and something to look forward to, so we organized a few soccer games.

That was it.

Six teams.
One division.
A few weeks of planning.

Now look at what this community has built together.
This year we had 16 soccer teams across 3 divisions — including our first-ever women’s division — along with pickleball, spikeball, a touch-a-truck event, kids activities, food, music, and so many incredible people coming together for something bigger than themselves.

But what means the most to us isn’t the numbers.

It’s the feeling.
It’s seeing complete strangers support one another.
It’s watching kids run around laughing.
It’s teammates becoming lifelong friends.
It’s families coming together during difficult times and realizing they are not alone.

What started as a tournament has become a community.

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support from our volunteers, local businesses that donated prizes and financially helped cover field rental costs, spectators, athletes, and every single person who showed up this weekend.

As a community, we have grown this event enough that this year we were able to support not one, but two individuals and their families.

Recipient 1: Waylon
Waylon is an 8-year-old boy from Peterborough who was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January 2025. He’s the kind of kid who always has a smile on his face and loves hockey, baseball, golf, and being outdoors.

Since his diagnosis, he has faced more challenges than most adults could ever imagine — chemotherapy, blood transfusions, countless procedures, long hospital stays, time away from home, missing school, friends, and the sports he loves.

And through all of it, he continues to show up with strength, courage, and positivity.

That’s what a fighter looks like.

Recipient 2:

Our second recipient has chosen to remain anonymous but shared part of his journey with Hereditary Leiomyomatosis and Renal Cell Cancer (HLRCC), a rare genetic condition that can increase the risk of aggressive kidney cancer.

He is currently battling Stage 4 cancer and has gone through multiple treatment methods due to treatment resistance and severe side effects from previous attempts. He is currently finding success through targeted therapy and shared that this support has brought both emotion and relief to his little family.

Cancer impacts more people than we realize.
Almost every person reading this knows someone who has fought this battle.

And that’s why this tournament matters.
Because no family should ever feel alone during the hardest moments of their lives.

This year, together, we raised an incredible $8,500.

Be proud of yourselves.
Every raffle ticket purchased.
Every donation made.
Every volunteer hour.
Every game played.
Every share on social media.

It all made a difference.

To our sponsors, donors, volunteers, athletes, and everyone who came out this weekend — thank you.

You are the reason this continues to grow.
You are the reason families feel supported.
And you are the reason Robert’s legacy continues to live on.
