The Silent Kind Soul
Last night, as I was getting ready for bed, I received a phone call from a man named Reg asking if I could sharpen his skates. This was the third time he had reached out, but he’d never actually shown up before. This time, he insisted it was urgent and that he needed them sharpened right away. I told him, "Come on over, and I’ll get you fixed up."
As I was working on the blades, I noticed a price tag on them: five dollars. I looked at Reg and asked, "Where did you find these? Are you heading out for a skate tomorrow?"
"I got them at a local secondhand shop," he replied. "And no, I’m not the one going skating. I buy these, get them ready, and donate them to the Saint John library. They loan them out to people who want to skate at Market Square but don't have their own gear."
Surprised, I asked him how long he’d been doing this and what inspired him. He told me he’d been at it for a couple of years. "I just want people to enjoy the sport without the burden of the cost," he said. "Often, the skates never even come back to the library, but I keep doing it for the love of the game."
When I finished the job, Reg asked me what he owed. In good conscience, I couldn't take his money. "No charge," I told him. He still insisted on handing me a $10 bill.
I’ve decided to pay it forward and donate that money to P.R.O. Kids Hampton. It’s a good lesson to keep in mind: those unassuming individuals we cross paths with every day are often the greatest supporters of our community.
Thank you, Reg.
