Re: Spring 2014 Newsletter
On behalf of the staff at Scenic Woods, I would like to take a moment and welcome you all back to the club for the 2014 season. We are excited to get things underway once the golf course has been deemed playable. Indeed this has been a very cruel winter and your patience will finally be rewarded.
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Richard Sweeting and I will be the new General Manager at Scenic Woods. I have been a CPGA Class “A” Professional for the past 22 years within various roles of the golf industry. I have been involved with both public and private facilities. Another amazing experience was working at Callaway Canada where I was the lead club fitter in Canada for 6 years.
I am looking forward to collaborating with all committees and assisting where needed in all club events. With my extensive background in member related functions, I am excited to help put a new spin on some of the existing events.
I look forward to the upcoming season and meeting all the members. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Richard Sweeting
Memberships
We are fortunate to have many new members this year at Scenic Woods. Welcome and please take time to introduce yourselves. We will be offering many different fun member only tournament. Members will note that this year GolfNorth has instilled a new computer system and all Members must present their Member Card and Photo ID to the Pro Shop prior tee off.
Members Shot Gun
When we have a large tournament booking on a Saturday afternoon we will hold a 7AM shotgun in order to accommodate as many members as possible.
Handicaps
There is a lot of information on this topic in the Scenic website as well there is a sign up sheet in the Pro Shop that will allow the handicap committee to send you all the info you need via e-mail or phone to log on to the computer in the lounge and enter your scores. You can contact Terry Wilson at [email protected] or Richard Sweeting [email protected] for additional information.
Scorecards
New scorecards have been ordered and should be available within a few weeks. They have a number of changes but most importantly they have the new hanicap number for each hole as well as the slope and course rating for the various tees.
Course Changes
What a winter eh? Have gone on some walks around the course and we still have lots of snow and ice around but with the rain and sunny weather it will melt fast. This in turn will put us in a flooding situation. Lots of work still to be done with clean up and wash outs in cart paths and bunkers. Still a work in progress. As some of you may have seen late October into November in 2013 that the tee decks on #4 blue, #7 blue and extra deck, and #8 red were rottilled, leveled, fertilized and sodded. These tees now need to dry out, rolled and to be brought down to height of cut before any play can happen on them. Frequent topdressing will help bring down the height of cut every time.
Staff
We are excited to welcome our new General Manager, Richard Sweeting. He is motivated to bring some fresh ideas and a new perspective to the club. Paul Brown will be returning as the Pro Shop Manager. Katelyn Mills will be moving in to an Event Coordinator role for all tournament and other outside events.
We would like to congratulate Kerri Mulder on accepting the Superintendent position. Returning staff will include Ed Elliott as 1st assistant, Emily Mulder, Aaron Shrum. New members to the crew are still being decided upon; names will be introduced when a decision has been made. As a new superintendent, I am looking forward to learning member’s names and a great year to come. My door is always open, and I welcome people to come to me with concerns or interests.
This year we are looking to hire two Backshop employees. Responsibilities will include range picking once a week, cart washing and light maintenance. Personal will work 4-5 days during the season, for more information please contact Paul Brown in the Pro Shop.
