As we’ve got an international break this weekend, let’s take a crack at this age old question – who stands atop your holy trinity in the West Ham cannon? Not necessarily the “all time best”, but the players that hooked you and cemented your support. Admittedly, I () had a bit of difficulty here. The first two are pretty easy but gun to my head, I’d flip flop as to which took the top spot each time you ask me. And third on the list is where it really gets sticky. But today, it goes as follows…
1) Julian Dicks – The Terminator… enough said. To this day, no one is as terrifying when it comes to tackles or penalties. I don’t think any keeper looked forward to lining up against Dicksy and god help you if you were trying to move past him to get to Ludo (which was another beast in and of itself). I hope you didn’t want your ankles because they were about to get wrecked.
2) Paolo Di Canio – I don’t think I need to justify this one. No one, and I mean no one has ever created an infectious energy like that Italian legend. And good lord, that finesse and finish. He was wild, unpredictable, passionate, and a bit mental… which lined up pretty well with the attitudes of East London’s finest citizens. It breaks my heart to think we’ll never see another like him.
3) John Moncur – This is where it got tough. There were a number of players I could easily slot in here but John was iron clad. No one embodied “don’t f**k around” the way that he did. He was as vicious as they come and his antics off the pitch only made me love him more. Were there “better” players at midfield over the years, sure… but there were few I enjoyed watching as much.
Honourable mentions go to Ian Bishop, Martin Allen, Tony Cottee, Steve Potts, and Rio Ferdinand. I could keep going but I need to stop somewhere. What are your personal top three and for extra credit, why?
