Today, June 21, is the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day. It's a time to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across the country.

In honour of this important day, we want to highlight the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games. In fall 2009, a group of Mi’kmaw Chiefs from Unama’ki began discussions on reviving the Summer Games, an athletic gathering and competitions that Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia previously held from the 1970s to 1990s. The Games have taken place every year since, excluding two years during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of the 2026 Games taking place this August, and being hosted by Sipekne'katik, we want to revisit the success of last year's games!

The Games took place in Wagmatcook First Nation from August 14-24.

Introducing Sport Nova Scotia's latest series ✨Olivia Tries Sports ✨

Our communications coordinator is on a mission to showcase the many amazing sports represented by our provincial sport organizations, while fearlessly proving that every athlete, no matter the sport, starts as an amateur.

So whether you or your loved one is looking for a sport to try, a community to join or a new way to get active, we want Nova Scotians of all ages and abilities to get out and experience the positive benefits of sport.

Many thanks to Weightlifting Nova Scotia for collaborating with us, to CrossFit Kaos for hosting us, and JP and Cassidy for being such great coaches. 🏋️

Tune in next month as OIivia hits the mat. 🥋

This week our new CEO, Brad Lawlor, had the opportunity to sit down for an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Todd Battis to talk about his vision for sport in our province.

Topics included the need for more infrastructure, the importance of investing in sport and the preventative health benefits of participation.

“We want the opportunity for kids and people throughout Nova Scotia to access sport if they want to access sport. No matter age, stage or circumstance, we do provide that and we have some really good people doing some really good things. I’m coming in at a time where I’m trying to continue the positive, but there is still quite a bit of work to do.”
