There is more Nova ScotiaN representation at Nationals to celebrate!

MABO assignor Matt Boyle made us all proud at the men’s tournament, and had the honor of officiating the Bronze Medal game (pictured below). Matt gives so much back to officiating, from training new officials to spending weekends busy making sure all minor games have an official, all while pushing himself in his officiating career constantly. We love seeing his hard work pay off with these well deserved big moments! Congratulations Matt!

Nova Scotia was well represented at Nationals this weekend!

At the women’s Tournament, our Provincial Assessor Stephen Clow was awarded the honour of officiating the Gold Medal Game alongside Carrera Lamoureux (Manitoba), and Shelley Quintos (QC).

Stephen is a great official who works incredibly hard and gives back so much to the officiating community. Stephen, we are all so proud of you and congratulate you on this well earned opportunity.

This happens to me many times when I’m photographing basketball. I’ll admit — I can have a bit of bias depending on who’s playing. When a call happens that I disagree with, I often go back and check my photos.

In this case, I didn’t think she stepped out of bounds. Neither did her fans.

But when I reviewed the image… she was out of bounds.

Moments like this remind me just how difficult the job of an official really is. Most times, they are right. They do an amazing job, making split-second decisions under pressure.

Respect for the stripes.

Congratulations to a pillar of our officiating community, Paul Hanson!

We are so grateful to see Paul celebrated for all his hard work, and even more grateful he will continue to be an integral part of our community off court by helping teach the next generation of officials.

Last but not least of our 2025 awards, we wanted to recognize an official who wasn't able to attend the meeting but we still want to be able to celebrate their success!

Every now and then, someone comes along who just seems built for the role — someone who steps on the floor, picks up the whistle, and you can just tell: they get it. Quinn Hayden is one of those officials, and one of this year’s Metro Association of Basketball Officials Up and Coming Official of the Year winners!

For Quinn, basketball and officiating are in the blood. You can see it in how he moves, how he manages a game, how he carries himself on the floor. He’s a natural — not just because he knows the game, but because he respects the game. That’s a big difference, and it shows.

Quinn brings a balanced, disciplined, and fair approach every time he steps on the court. He’s not out there just calling fouls — he’s working to understand the game through the eyes of every stakeholder: players, coaches, and fellow officials. And that awareness makes him incredibly effective — and incredibly respected.

He loves to work. He shows up. He puts in the effort. And despite being early in his journey, his ceiling is already looking high. In fact, if he stays on this path — who knows — he might just go further than his tee shot… and for those who’ve seen it, that’s saying something!

Quinn, your instincts, attitude, and commitment make you stand out already — and we’re all excited to see where this takes you.

Congratulations, Quinn Hayden — Up and Coming Official of the Year! The Sky’s the Limit!! 🏀💫
