Most women over 50 aren’t eating enough protein — and it might be working against every rep you’re putting in. 🍳
Let’s talk about it, simply and without the diet-culture noise. 🚫🥗
As we age, our bodies become less efficient at using protein to build and maintain muscle — a process called anabolic resistance. At the same time, we naturally start losing muscle mass every decade after 30, a process that speeds up significantly after 50 if we’re not working against it.
That means the protein habits that worked fine at 30 often aren’t enough at 55, 60, or 70 — even if your diet hasn’t changed at all.
Here’s why this matters so much for the strength you’re building in the gym: 💪
Your muscles need protein as the raw material for repair and growth after training. Without enough of it, you can be doing everything right and still not see the strength gains you’re working for.
A few practical, non-restrictive ways to build more protein:
🥚 Add a source of protein to every meal, not just dinner — eggs, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese.
🍗 Aim for a palm-sized portion of protein (chicken, fish, tofu, legumes) at lunch and dinner.
🥤 A simple protein shake can help fill the gap on busy days.
🫘 Beans, lentils, and edamame are excellent options if you’re eating more plant-based.
This isn’t about counting every gram or following a rigid diet. It’s about being a more intentional so your body has what it needs to build the strength you’re training so hard for.
Nutrition and strength training work together. We talk about this regularly, because a great program can only take you so far if your body doesn’t have the fuel to respond to it.
If you’ve ever wondered whether what you’re eating is helping or holding back your progress, that’s exactly the kind of conversation we love having. No fad diets, no guilt — just practical guidance that fits your life.
