We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Mike Brittain, a long-time volunteer and cherished member of our WRKC family.
Mike dedicated over 25 years to WRKC. For much of that time, he served as Race Director and Track Official, and for a number of those years he was also a valued member of our Board, including serving as Treasurer. Beyond WRKC, Mike played a key role in the Brian Stewart Regional Karting Championship and the CanAm Midget Series. Prior to joining WRKC, he co-founded Mosport Kart Club with his wife Kelly and helped lead it for many years.
He gave so much of his time and energy to grassroots racing while also being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a proud karting dad while his son Josh raced in the ’90s, and a hockey dad in the years that followed as Josh pursued his professional career.
Mike’s leadership on the race track kept our drivers safe, our races fair, and our events running on schedule for many years. He was never afraid to make tough calls or stand up for what he believed in, but he was just as quick to help a driver after an accident or encourage someone through a tough day. He mentored our team of flaggers, often taking new volunteers under his wing, and never missed a Driver Training Day in 25 years. He truly enjoyed welcoming new families into the sport and teaching young drivers. He spent one of his final days at this year’s Driver Training, a reflection of his unwavering commitment to the club and the sport.
Thank you Mike for your decades of leadership and dedication to the WRKC. You will be greatly missed and always remembered.
