Most Canadians have had their Covid and flu shots. We know Americans have a 3x higher mortality from Covid in 2022 than in 2021. Many Canadians have taken pride taking the first step with shots.
Yet, we know our Canadian health system continues to be overwhelmed with respiratory illnesses, not necessarily Covid or flu. This obviously affects all other medical emergencies. The average Canadian can certainly play a helpful role.
A common cold might be 8 days. Flu might be longer, includes muscle aches. Bronchitis might be 4-5 weeks with phlegm turning lighter in colour and thickness as you recover.
Of course, prevention is preferred. Smart exercise, hydration, sleep, nutrition, stress mgt are trad strategies most of us know. Even more important for the immune-challenged. Masking as appropriate can help.
But perhaps riding these through (generating appropriate antibodies) IF not life-threatening might be an option? That includes applying the above strategies more than usual, pacing your energy ouput for recovery.
Perhaps over-the-counter decongestants and/or expectorants or hydration or steam for non-emerg treatable symptoms?
Perhaps immune system enhancers such as turmeric, garlic etc. could contribute to the positive effect of regular exercise? Perhaps salt gargle in some upper tract infections? Perhaps hot/cold bags?
We do know that regular exercise is THE factor most corelated with longevity. I would add pain reduction is a nice bonus.
Definitely, our Healthcare system is overly-challenged.
In many cases, individuals can choose personal strategies that reduce this strain and enhance their quality of life. Even regular walking helps.
Where they CAN, they SHOULD. We'll have a more sustainable health-care system and happier citizens.
