Why I Changed My Mind About Lifting Straps

I used to think using lifting straps meant your grip was weak. I was wrong.

The longer I've trained, coached, and gained experience, the more I've realized they're one of the most misunderstood tools in the gym.

With a conventional deadlift, your grip gets a brief break every time you return the barbell to the floor.

Romanian deadlifts are different.

Your hands are responsible for holding onto the bar from the first rep to the last, which means your grip is under constant tension throughout the entire set.

For most people (unless you're a rock climber), your glutes and hamstrings are capable of producing far more force than your grip can sustain.

That's why I use lifting straps.

They're not a shortcut, and they're certainly not "cheating." They're simply a tool that allows your posterior chain to become the limiting factor instead of your grip.

Could I use an alternate grip? Absolutely. But for Romanian deadlifts, I prefer keeping both hands in the same position. It keeps the movement symmetrical and allows me to focus on what I'm actually trying to train—my glutes and hamstrings.

The longer I coach, the more I realize that becoming stronger isn't just about lifting heavier weights. It's about understanding why you're using each tool and each exercise in the first place.

💬 What's one piece of fitness advice that you've changed your mind about over the years? I'd love to hear it in the comments.

Most people think getting stronger is simply a matter of adding more weight to the bar.

In reality, how you train is often more important than how much you lift.

During exercises like the bench press, I'm paying attention to movement quality, control, positioning, and whether someone is moving efficiently under load—not just whether the weight goes up.

The rep itself only tells part of the story. How someone moves during that rep often has a bigger impact on long-term progress than people realize.

Those details might seem small, but they're often the difference between simply exercising and following a structured plan designed to build strength and muscle over the long term.

That's the approach I take with every private one-on-one client at ParkIN Fitness in Guelph.

What Real Progress Actually Looks Like

Most people think progress comes from doing more.

More exercises. More variation. More intensity.

In reality, it usually comes from doing the same things better, making small adjustments and improving how each rep is performed.

That’s what you’re seeing here.

This is how I coach every session at ParkIN Fitness with private, one-on-one personal training in Guelph focused on improving how you actually move and perform.

Why your hips and back feel tight (and it’s NOT age)

You’ve put a lot of time into building your life
but your body hasn’t kept up.

Sitting most of the day changes how your body moves.

Over time, that turns into tight hips, a stiff back, and that constant ache that never really goes away.

It’s not age - it’s what your body adapts to.

This is exactly what I help people fix through private one-on-one personal training here in Guelph.

No crowded gyms, just focused training built around you.

Pull-ups are one of the best upper-body exercises you can do.

But most people struggle with them for a few simple reasons:

They start too heavy, and attempt to lift their whole body weight.

Also, a common fault they try to pull with their arms instead of their back.

That’s where band-assisted pull-ups can make a huge difference.

A properly set resistance band reduces just enough bodyweight to help you build the strength and control needed to eventually perform full pull-ups properly while still doing the work yourself.

This is the kind of progression I coach regularly during private one-on-one personal training sessions here in Guelph.

No crowded gyms.

No intimidation.

Just focused coaching designed around YOU.

Not every workout has to feel intimidating.

During this bench press set, the cat decided it was the perfect time to jump up and supervise the lift
 so the set continued.

That’s one of the things I love about private personal training.

No crowded gym.

No pressure.

Besides from a đŸ˜ș.

If you’ve ever felt out of place in a traditional gym, this is a completely different experience.

If your shoulder feels unstable during pressing, you might be training the rotator cuff but not in the position that actually matters.

When the arm elevates to around 90°, the teres minor plays a bigger role in external rotation and joint control.

In this video, I demonstrate a 90° dumbbell external rotation that:

‱ Trains the external rotators in an elevated
position
‱ Improves shoulder stability
‱ Transfers better to pressing movements

This isn’t about lifting heavy. It’s about positioning and control.

9 seconds can feel like forever when the bar stops moving.

Last set.

Banded bench press.

Final rep turns into a full-on grinder and he commits all the way through.

This is what real strength looks like:
Staying calm, staying tight, and finishing the rep when quitting would be easier.

Bridges with a band are a warm-up drill I regularly use with clients who want their squats to feel stronger, more stable, and easier on their joints.

It’s common for the glute muscles to be less active during squatting if you don't have a good mind muscle connection.

This banded bridge helps gently “wake up” the hips so they’re ready to do their share of the work before any barbell work.

I coach this movement with slow, controlled reps, and outward tension on the band.

The goal isn’t to exhaust the muscles — it’s to prepare them.

This is exactly the kind of joint-friendly, confidence-building preparation I focus on in private one-on-one training sessions at ParkIN Fitness. đŸ’Ș😃đŸ’Ș
