Golden Horseshoe Mounted Archery

Last weekend we held our first official competition/grading event of 2023!

It was awesome to see the results of the training we've been putting in through the winter. Even more awesome is the huge amount of support and encouragement between participants. Mounted archery is so much better with friends cheering you on!

Unfortunately we had a freak thunder/hail storm on Sunday afternoon so the last two groups did not get to do their scoring runs. We have planned a make-up day for those riders. Thank you everyone for being so helpful and understanding.

There were so many accomplishments witnessed and goals achieved at this event! Some are score/grade related, but not all! We also saw new horse and rider pairings, riders stepping out of their comfort zone, confidence building, and horse-training wins. Here are some highlights....

Breanne shot calmly and consistently, finishing with two S4 scores, and earning the S4 grade!

Heather finished with two S5 scores, jumping up from last year's S1 grade and earning the S5 grade!

Heidi finished with two S1 scores, one of which included a very exciting bullseye, and earned the S1 grade!

Kathryn rode in the canter division for the first time, earned the S1 grade, and achieved her first S2 score!

Graeme rode in the trot division for the first time, with a new horse, and finished with a WT2 score!

Ashley rode in the canter division for the first time with her horse that she's trained for mounted archery, finished with two S2 scores, and earned the S2 grade!

Kay finished with an S2 score and, after getting rained out on day 2, bravely took on the tower ba****ck, shooting a mind-blowing triple bullseye!

Max achieved an HA1 score on the Raid 2-3-3 track which, combined with his 3 HA1 scores from last year, has earned him the HA1 grade!

Seanna achieved an S4 score which, combined with her S4 score from last year, earned her the S4 grade!

Alana finished with a WT2 score and, after a lot of impressive horse-training, has made huge steps toward taking her horse Ruby to the canter division!

Joe rode a new horse, finished with a WT2 score, and made a lot of progress toward taking on the canter division!

Spring has sprung and we're beginning to move our archery practice outdoors! Pretty soon we'll be riding and shooting on the outdoor track 🏇

Another arena postal is in the books! Several of our members competed in the Feb-Mar arena postal match at walk, trot, and canter. A lot of improvements and accomplishments can be seen in these scores! Congratulations everyone!

Shout out to Seanna Tebbutt who won the adult beginner category for the trot match!

SUSSEX BASIC ARENA COURSE - TROT

This being the Trot postal, our main focus is on the beginner and iHBA entries.

Congratulations to Karla van Deventer (Barebow Mounted Archers - MAASA South Africa) on Mahasi Danube who got the top score in the match in the Children, Junior & Youth (beginner) category.

Congrats also to Seanna Tebbutt (Golden Horseshoe Mounted Archery, Canada) on Amber who was highest in the Adult beginner category.

A shout out to Jaco Barend Jacobs (Kings and Prophets , South Africa) on Hawk who competed in the Adult experienced category and won the match.

We had a lot of fun participating in IHAA's Dec-Jan arena postal match! In total, we submitted 19 scores for the walk, trot, and canter matches. This course was a challenge and a real test of both horsemanship and archery skills. Congratulations to everyone on your accomplishments!

SAVE THE NORTH COURSE - WALK

With this being the Walk postal, our main focus is on the beginner and iHBA entries.

Congratulations to Joe van Troost (Golden Horseshoe Mounted Archery, Canada) on Conner who was the top scoring beginner in the walk postal match, competing in the Adult category.

Congrats also to Tamar Pretorius (Barebow Mounted Archers - MAASA South Africa) on Mahasi Danube who was highest in the children & junior & young rider - beginner category

A shout out to Max Brodie-Greer (Ribble Valley Mounted Archers, United Kingdom) on Noitibo who got the highest score in the Junior & Youth experienced category and to Kendall Goddard (Canada) on Conner competing in the adult experienced category who got the top score in the match.

Did you know that one of our club members is also an accomplished author?! 2022 has been GHMA's second year as a mounted archery club. Last year was spent spreading the joy of mounted archery across Ontario through intro clinics. This year was spent creating a place for learning and improvement at Bluemoon Riding Centre. Thanks to Bluemoon and our awesome, enthusiastic members, we were able to host our first few competitions!

The competitions were not entirely about comparing scores. Rather they became a fun, supportive atmosphere to work on personal mounted archery goals. Some mounted archers worked on improving their scores and grades, some took the opportunity to try something new, some worked on training their horses, and some came to experience a weekend of camping and horses and archery. All of it was so extremely impressive to watch!

Congratulations to GHMA members Seanna, Marnie, and Alana who achieved first, second, and third place in the trot division of the 2022 Canadian Mounted Archery Tournament Series! To all GHMA members who find their names on the C-MATS list, I hope you are so incredibly proud of your efforts and accomplishments this past year! Thank you for representing our club on a national level!

Happy Halloween! Yesterday the GHMA crew went to battle with some very unfortunate pumpkins! We like to call it...
CASTLE DEFENCE! 🏰

It began one bright, sunny morning when a horde of jack-o'-lanterns led by "The Admiral" approached from the east, threatening our castle. The archers of GHMA mobilized into two squadrons - "Legion of Doom" and "The Corrupted" - and quickly got to work picking off their foes with ranged attacks from the highest point in the castle.

"The Corrupted", comprised of Kendall the Corruptor, Seanna the Shifting Shadow, Heidi Hellstare of the Battlehorns, and Koko the Conqueror, felled the most enemies (5900 points).

"Legion of Doom", comprised of Joe the Bow of Woe, Kathryn the Dutchess of Doom, Breanne the Belle of the Bloodslayers, and Dylan the Duke of Ruin, made a significant dent in the invaders numbers (5800 points).

Special honours were awarded to Seanna the Shifting Shadow who had the highest individual success of all the defenders (2000 points) and Joe the Bow of Woe who brought down The Admiral with one well placed arrow.

When The Admiral fell, the hoard's conviction faltered and it became clear that it was time to take the fight to the battlefield! With Joe the Bow of Woe's leadership and arsenal of close combat weapons, we triumphed over the invaders and successfully defended our castle! Finally, Kathryn the Dutchess of Doom beheaded The Admiral with her sword to send a message to all who dare threaten her comrades.

Thank you all for bravely defending our castle and showing no mercy to the horde! 🏹🗡️

It's a GHMA style Halloween party! 🎃

Everyone brought a pumpkin to shoot! Ground archers and mounted archers all got in on the fun. From the pumpkin carvings, to the costumes, and even the baking, we sure do have some super creative members! Nice job everyone! Thanks for making today awesome!
