Why do you do karate?

I get this question ALOT. Honestly there’s many reasons. Karate has completely shaped me as a person and continues to influence me everyday of my life.

I started as a kid after watching a movie, convinced I wanted to be cool like the ninjas on screen. My parents thought it would be great to get me active, give me discipline and learn self defence.

I continued to train, karate was just another activity to keep me fit for skiing. Until it wasn’t… As a kid I never understood what I was learning or how karate actually impacted me. Through my journey I have learned so many things and will continue to always learn more.

Yes I learned how to punch, kick and defend myself if it came down to that. I also found confidence and courage. Built determination and grit. Grown to understand respect and humility. I have also met so many amazing people through this martial art.

I do karate because of the community and the opportunity to always keep learning more. Not just for fighting, but as a person.

(Forgot to get pictures from the kids class🤦‍♀️)

Huge thank you to everyone who came out to our first Kyokushin Karate classes!

It was awesome seeing so many people willing to step out, try something new, and push themselves. The energy, effort, and support from everyone made the class a huge success and honestly got me even more excited for what’s to come.

This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for more classes running throughout the summer! Whether you’re completely new to martial arts or have trained before, everyone is welcome.

What is Kyokushin Karate?

A lot of people ask what Kyokushin Karate actually is and what makes it different.

To me, Kyokushin is much more than just learning how to punch and kick. It’s about pushing yourself, building confidence, developing discipline, and learning perseverance through hard work and training.

Yes, it’s a practical martial art and a strong form of self-defense, but it also helps people grow mentally and emotionally. The challenges in training teach you how to stay calm under pressure, overcome obstacles, and keep improving little by little every day.

One of the things I love most about Kyokushin is that anyone can start. You don’t need experience or to already be “tough.” Everyone begins somewhere, and the journey is about becoming a stronger version of yourself at your own pace.

I was given the option of girl guides or karate at the age of 5. My dad, then made me watch the movie Ong-Bak. You can guess which one I chose after being convinced I could become a ninja!🥷

I kept training and fell in love with kyokushin karate for many reasons and it has completely shaped my life for the best. If becoming a ninja isn’t your reason to start there are many other reasons to begin!

EVERY level of fitness, ALL ages, ANYBODY and EVERYONE is welcome and encouraged to come try it out!

OSU Grande Prairie 👊

Kyokushin Karate is full contact karate — not point fighting.

You’ll learn real technique, build strength, and as you progress, experience controlled contact training that pushes you both physically and mentally.

But it’s more than just fighting.

Karate is built on discipline, respect, and philosophy. It’s a way of life that challenges you to constantly become a better version of yourself.

No experience needed — just show up and start.

OSU! 👊
My name is Mya. I started training in Kyokushin Karate in Banff when I was 5 years old, and it’s been a huge part of my life ever since.

I recently moved up to Grande Prairie for work, and after being here for a bit, I realized there isn’t really anything like Kyokushin here. I didn’t want to lose that part of my life, so instead of waiting, I decided to keep my journey going and start something here myself.

I’m opening up Kyokushin classes focused on real, full-contact training—something that challenges you mentally and physically, no matter your experience level.
Whether you’ve never trained before or you’re just looking for something more real, you’re welcome to come try it out.
No experience needed—just show up ready to work.

Message me if you’re interested or have any questions!
