2026 World Girls Ice Hockey Weekend - Apply Now to Host Your Event.

The IIHF World Girl’s Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) is an international celebration of the women & girls’ game. Throughout the last decade, Hockey Canada has proven to be a leader by reaching hundreds of thousands of young Canadian girls through this event. The WGIHW creates a national sense of community; anyone in Canada can register to host their own event that works to recruit engage Canadians in the sport of hockey.

In 2025, there were 55 events hosted; with more than 12,000 participants who attended a WGIHW in their respective area. With full granting support from the Hockey Canada Foundation, Hockey Canada was able to provide subsidies to respective Members to cover all of the expenses associated with hosting all events. That is $100,000 invested directly back into girls and women's hockey at the grassroots level!

WGIHW PROCESS

Aligning with other Hockey Canada programs such as First Shift and Pathway to Hockey, the WGIHW program will continue the same process for application, registration, and event management for the 26-27 season.

All WGIHW events must go through the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) to ensure a streamlined process.

It is with profound sadness that Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador shares the passing of Susan (Sue) Pitcher, beloved spouse of Craig Tulk, Executive Director of Hockey NL. Sue passed peacefully on August 20, 2026, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

For those of us who had the privilege of knowing Sue, it is difficult to put into words what made her so special. She was one of the kindest, most genuine and sincere people you could ever meet. She had a remarkable way of making people feel welcome and cared for, and her warmth, generosity and friendship touched so many within our hockey community and well beyond it.

Sue’s contribution to hockey was also very much her own. She was a recipient of Hockey Canada’s Liz MacKinnon Award, recognizing the dedicated support, time and special contributions of the spouse or companion of a Hockey Canada volunteer. It was a fitting recognition for someone who gave so much of herself in support of others and of the game that became such an important part of her family’s life.

Those who knew Sue will remember her love of cooking and the happiness she found in bringing people together. For Sue, food was more than something to share; it was one of the many ways she showed people that she cared. Whether around a table, at a hockey event, or simply in conversation, Sue had a way of making those around her feel at home.

Her passing leaves an enormous void, most especially for Craig, Dylan, and their family, but also for the many friends and members of our hockey family who were fortunate enough to know and love her. We will remember Sue not simply for what she did, but for how she made people feel. Our lives and our hockey community are better because she was part of them.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, members and the entire Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador family, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Craig, Dylan, their family, and all those who loved Sue.

We ask that the privacy of Craig, Dylan, and the family be respected as they grieve this tremendous loss.

Sue will be deeply missed and very fondly remembered.
