The image provided is a comprehensive list of Shotokan Karate katas, which are detailed patterns of movements practiced in martial arts to simulate self-defense. The table categorizes these katas into different groups and provides data related to specific points within each form.
Kata Categories
The katas are organized into three main categories:
Sh*tei Gata: These are the mandatory, foundational forms in many Shotokan organizations, often a prerequisite for early belt tests.
Sentei Gata: These are intermediate or advanced forms, typically selected by the practitioner for demonstration or competition purposes.
Jiyu Gata: These are the most advanced forms, often requiring a deeper understanding of breathing, timing, and complex movements like jumps and drops.
Table Columns
The columns provide specific technical details for each kata:
Kata: The name of the specific form (e.g., Heian Shodan, Bassai Dai).
Original 15 Forms: A marker indicating which katas were among the original set taught by Gichin Funakoshi when he brought karate to mainland Japan.
Kiai (1st & 2nd): The specific move number or timing within the sequence where the practitioner should execute a kiai (a sharp, powerful shout). Kiai helps to focus energy, tighten core muscles for protection, and startle an opponent.
Count: The total number of distinct movements or steps within the kata routine.
