The hardest update.

On Monday August 17th Reg Savage, my Dad, passed away.

I am blessed to have had the opportunity to work side by side with him for many years.

Dad retired from the shop officially in 2005 however was an instrumental part of just about every aspect of the business in the years that followed. When a tough decision needed to be made I invariably called him for an opinion, advice, and more often than not, he provided direction that allowed me to move forward with confidence.

Always watchful, he would often call with a suggestion or support. I will forever cherish the calls we had — especially those about the bike swap. Even in his later years he loved coming to the swap and seeing his old friends amongst the hustle and bustle of the event. The most recent swap in April was the only one he wasn’t able to attend.

He understood the business well and understood the challenges that I faced. He never wavered in his support and for that I am, and will be, forever grateful.

When I started producing “Savage” bikes, I decided that the first model would be called the “Big Reg”. I will never forget the smile on his face when I showed him the very first prototype. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor his legacy then and I can’t think of a better way now.

I will ensure that the “Big Reg” remains our flagship model so long as I continue to make bikes.

As we navigate this difficult time, I am reminded, almost daily, that I owe so much to my Dad, and the work he did. He ensured that I had every chance to succeed and was there to lift me up when I wasn’t sure I’d get there. Somehow he always knew I’d be ok.

Time is a funny thing. At times it goes slowly and at others we want to grab onto a moment and slow things down. Selfishly, I wish I had more time with him. I am grateful for the fond memories that I will cherish forever.

As for me, I have found that in times like these, we often ask “what would our loved one want?” In time, that voice invariably fades. My preference is, and will be, to ask “How would my Dad want me to behave?” I will hold this question closely to my heart and will adhere to its answer for all of my days.

Thank you Dad for giving me more than I ever deserved.

We will be hosting a celebration of life at Savage’s Bike Shop, August 29 from 5-7 pm. Please join us as we share stories, music, and fond memories in celebration of our one and only Reg Savage.
