Mountain Adventure Skills Training - College of the Rockies Outdoor Adventure Leadership Training Spend more of your time out of the classroom and right in the action, and turn your education into an adventure!

Our Mountain Adventure Skills Training (MAST) program provides first-hand outdoor adventure experience and you can earn professional certifications for the adventure tourism industry, all while while you enjoy the Canadian Rocky Mountain lifestyle. Our instructors include highly skilled guides in avalanche safety, rock climbing, mountaineering, whitewater kayaking and rafting, backcountry skiing,

backpacking, canoeing, and wilderness hiking. You can earn industry certifications in avalanche skills training, ski/snowboard instruction, swiftwater rescue, and more. You can also gain university credits towards a degree in Adventure Tourism.

Recent MAST graduate Luca joins hundreds of alumni in adventure tourism careers. This summer he will be guiding for Canyon Rafting on the beautiful Elk River. Prior to MAST, Luca was working at Fernie Alpine Resort and pondering what his future might hold. A friend told him about the MAST program and he was intrigued. It sounded like a blast and liked all the career options it exposed students to. He signed up and spent the summer on Vancouver Island surfing and hiking. Now having crossed the finish line, Luca has reflected on how much he has gotten from the program. "It exceeded my expectations incredibly. Learning about the adventure tourism industry was all new for me and it opened my eyes to potential careers and business ideas. The program is structured to provide the technical skills, leadership techniques and correct safety procedures needed to be comfortable doing the activity. I enjoyed the way I was tossed in the depth of lots of different activities that many humans don’t get to experience." Luca has an excellent attitude, great humour and will no doubt be an entertaining and technically savvy guide. Like all our alumni, we couldn't be more thrilled about the adventures to come.

Recent MAST Graduate Avery will be working this summer as a Raft Guide for Canyon Rafting on the Elk River. Avery is calm, thoughtful, quick to pick up new skills, creates fun and joy around him and will no doubt make an excellent guide. He grew up in Crawford Bay, BC and before MAST was working making brooms. Avery will be using the skills he has gained in MAST to pursue a career in the outdoor guiding industry.

MAST develops strong canoeists! We work on advanced maneuvers and skills, earning industry relevant certifications. With high spring water levels, wave trains, boils, whirlpools, surf waves and strong eddy lines... the MAST group (now alumni) felt the joy gained through canoeing.

After nine months and 100’s of adventures in our mountains, glaciers, rivers, snow, and forests the 2025/26 cohort of MAST students have completed their program!

The Mountain Adventure Skills Training students gathered with family, friends, and instructors to celebrate their accomplishments at the .
The evening was filled with toasts, tall tales, and much festivity.

Thank you to the MAST students who set up the fantastic decorations, shared a great slide show of the year, and took care of DJ-ing!

Please meet recent MAST graduate Cameron. Cameron boasts a fantastic Scottish accent (from Scotland of course) and a Canadian passport too. He has a great sense of humour and brings joy and determination to all that he does. He thrives outdoors and excelled at all skill sets throughout MAST. Cameron studied Geoscience at the University of Edinburgh. He signed up for MAST to get a better idea of future directions and aspirations. He will be returning to work on Saltspring Island this summer and is excited about many next adventures.

We would like to introduce current MAST student Ayla. Ayla grew up in the beautiful Slocan Valley and came to MAST having done comprehensive outdoor education programming in high school. She is totally at ease in the wilderness. She has earned new skills and certifications this year that she will be taking into her next professional direction - outdoor education. She will be leading multi-day canoeing and hiking programs with youth this summer at YMCA Camp Thunderbird on Vancouver Island.

We would like to celebrate current MAST student Sacha, who intersected with a MAST grad at a coffee shop and was inspired by a career change from trades (of which he is a talented carpenter) to envisioning a career in the mountains as a ski guide. Sacha is motivated and balances maturity and fun at all things he does. He is talented at new things and has the hard work first approach that leads to his success. Sacha grew up in Montreal and skiing and hiking have been a huge part of his life thanks to his dad. Post MAST Sacha plans to pursue a career is ski guiding in the winter and fly fishing guiding in the summer. His next steps are completing his Canadian Avalanche Association Avalanche Search and Rescue and Operations Level 1 courses and do a TON of fly fishing over the summer.
