Dance and Heart Dance and Heart is a Centre Wellington-based company creating “ballet illusions”—blending dance theatre with wild imagination.

We are proudly anti-perfectionist, valuing heart, story, and honesty over polish. At Dance and Heart, we create worlds that pulse with imagination. We reimagine traditional stories through a lens of mystery, wildness, and wonder. We call it a ballet illusion — where the lines between fantasy and reality blur, and movement becomes magic. We are a growing collective of dancers, dreamers, and makers, committed to crafting meaningful, never-seen-before stage experiences.

DANCE + heart presents Swan Lake, a contemporary re-telling of a story told, but only understood when it is lived. November 26-29th at the Fergus Grand Theatre.

In three acts (and one prologue), we explore the classic ballet's themes, it's origins and fables, and the value of experiencing a live performance.

This will be a DANCE and heart show. Expect a blend of musical styles, performance mediums, and visual elements. Get to know The Tellers of this story, by experiencing their raw talent and energy on stage.

We are a Centre Wellington based dance collective in our fourth season of performing and building theatrical dance spectacles. This year, we take on a transformative version of Swan Lake, showing at our local theatre. Tickets are now available.

We are a team of artists who live to love, love to explore, and explore to feel alive. We are grounded by the swirling original question of Swan Lake and it's opposing hypnotic forces: dark and light.

Fergus Grand Theatre is a a quaint theatre with historic roots in Fergus and Centre Wellington. If you haven't been, this is EXACTLY the kind of space locals are aiming to protect against developments and private ownership, to ensure vibrant cultural spaces exist in our little towns.

The Moonlight Edit

In a world where one million voices speak one million ideas into the apparent bottomless pit of a single set of ears,

I
tried
so
hard
to slow this story down.

I need time to stand still, so I can feel everything about this show. I don't want to trick myself into moving on, without grieving. I don't want to re-invent, without processing. Swan Lake is romance. It is four seasons. It will mark an era.

Over several full moons, I have been writing mediations to connect the themes of Swan Lake to broader moon-based stories. The meditations are meant to ground the purpose of storytelling to the spirited way humans self reflect. I will start emailing the meditations out on my mailing list, because I have 5000 emails a month to send and it's a goal to share more.

Slowly telling the story, taking time to accept the purpose of the story. This has been my activism against the pressure of one million voices, telling me 7 seconds is all I have. More captions, more footage, more AI packaging. I find it ironic that when we did Radium Girls, there was a giant glowing clock that ominously reminded us that time was running out. That's what it feels like right now - that the moon is competing with the clock to control the pace of our intake of poison.

Meditation has expanded my possibilities for an analog experiencing of building a show. I re-learned how to manually set my camera with the help of my friend Chelsea. I crumple real paper and string beads and use actual fabric to create mood boards. I refuse to generate captions with chatty even though I resent writing for the social machine.

"The Moonlight Edit" has two meanings. The first, it is the name of the preset I built to introduce The Tellers of our Swan Lake story.

The second, is the life edit.

The Tellers

Creating art work through the body requires the investigation of miracles. Overcoming immense emotional and physical pain, considering possibility, and fully sending our spirits into the infinite mystery of what is next for us.

Dance is a universal language of motion, connection, and expression. While the dancers “let go” and bare all emotion from the depths of their core to the ends of their fingertips, they are also suspending the moment. Holding, lifting, falling, spinning, slowing…The moment hovers and all time is irrelevant. There is magic and surrealism, and complete nature: heartbeats, breathe, eyes watering. Us and you, you and us... together we are healing through an indescribable combination of empathy, spirit, and instinct.

There is something relentless and youthful about dance, yet mature and controlled. In this way, no choreography is purely replicable. Each step comes alive through the body of an already established and whole person, making it different every time.

This is where the concept of "The Tellers" comes in. When you see a dancer, you are seeing hours of practice and training in recent times for them. But did you notice the scar on her knee from when she learned to ride a bike? Did you see the strands of blonde hair dye growing out? Did you notice a memorial tattoo or a less permanent streak of makeup from a tear?

The Tellers will be dancing the story of Swan Lake on our stage in November. Through their bodies, you will see stories of growth, resilience, and fearlessness. We do not hide behind costumes and makeup, but add them to an already decadent adornment of blood, sweat, and tears.

"a story told, but only understood, when it is lived"

We invite you to share our work, follow our story, and prepare to feel alive.
Soon, you will meet The Tellers.

🌀👯‍♀️Modern dance reminds us that strength is not always rigid. Sometimes strength looks like adaptability, softness, breath, recovery, and presence. Through technical training rooted in efficiency and awareness, dancers can develop movement habits that support greater resilience and longevity throughout their careers. 👯‍♀️🌀Technique training can be a form of self-respect. Every time we return to class, we invest in our growth, our discipline, and our future as artists. Modern dance develops versatility, mobility, coordination, and expressive range while encouraging dancers to move from a place of honesty and embodiment. Combined with intentional self-reflection and community connection, this work becomes about more than dance. It becomes about learning how to sustain yourself creatively, physically, and emotionally over time.

🌀👯‍♀️There is something deeply transformative about training in a space where people are committed to both artistry and personal growth. Modern dance asks us to be fully present and listen carefully to the body, to move with intention, and to develop strength through awareness rather than force. These tools support longevity in dance by helping artists cultivate adaptability, efficiency, and trust within their movement practice. This intensive is an invitation to show up for yourself while being supported by a community doing the same.

🌀👯‍♀️As dancers, we spend so much time striving for more..
more flexibility, more technique, more control, more achievement.

But true growth also comes from learning how to stay connected to others throughout the process.

Modern dance offers a pathway toward sustainable movement by teaching dancers how to work with breath, momentum, alignment, grounding, and release. These practices build resilience not only physically, but emotionally and artistically as well. In community, we remember we are allowed to grow without rushing, and evolve without losing ourselves.
