REFEREES & TIMEKEEPERS WANTED!!

The Elmira & District Hockey Referees Association (EDHRA) is seeking new referees and timekeepers for the 2023-2024 hockey season.

Interested in Becoming a Referee?
Anyone who is turning 14 years old or older and interested in becoming an OMHA official with the EDHRA can contact [email protected] to find out more details. Must turn 14 before the end of the first calendar year of that season (i.e. turn 14 prior to December 31, 2023 in the 2023/24 season).

Interested in Becoming a Timekeeper?
Timekeepers must be a minimum of 13 years of age to time keep with the EDHRA (as of August 31, 2023 - NO exceptions). Timekeepers must complete the online application form to be considered. All applications will be reviewed, and a reply will be provided to notify the timekeeper of a successful application. If you have any questions, they can be emailed to [email protected].

The NHLPA Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship is now accepting applications for the 2023 scholarships. As in past years there have been recipient from each of the following three categories: “Elmira Sugar Kings”, “Woolwich Minor Hockey” and “Woolwich Community at Large”.

In October 2003, local hockey hero Dan Snyder succumbed to injuries as a result of a car crash in Atlanta, Georgia. In Dan’s memory, funds were raised by the NHLPA and other donors and in 2004 the NHLPA Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund was born.

We are currently soliciting nominations of candidates who are residents of the Township of Woolwich who display Dan’s characteristics of determination, desire, good sportsmanship and community involvement. All successful candidates must be enrolled in a qualified accredited post secondary institution and funds are deposited directly to the school the recipient will attend that fall, under the direction of the K-W Community Foundation.

Applications can be found at www.kwcf.ca/dansnyderaward. Applications will be accepted until July 14, 2023 and can be mailed to or dropped off at the following address:

First Shift Program

Woolwich Minor Hockey Association is excited to have been selected to host the NHL and the NHLPA First Shift Program again this winter.

Registration for our Winter 2024 Opens June 2023. Please go to First Shift website to register.

The First Shift Program is open to boys and girls ages 6-10 years who have never previously registered or are not currently registered in minor hockey.

Welcome Event and Equipment fitting – Monday February 12 at 6pm at Woolwich Memorial Centre.

On Ice Sessions:
Saturday March 2 1pm
Saturday March 9 1pm
Saturday March 16 1pm
Saturday March 23 1pm
Saturday March 30 1 pm
Saturday April 6 1pm

All ice times on McLeod - 24 Snyder Ave S, Elmira.

WMHA BB Tryouts/Programming for 2023-24 Season

As previously indicated, WMHA’s intention and goal for the 2023-24 season is to field BB teams in the following age groups:

- U11BB
- U13BB
- U15BB
- U16BB
- U18BB*

*U18BB tryouts will take place in the Fall

Our plan is to, at minimum, hold one tryout at each of the BB age divisions to confirm interest.

Should we not have enough players in attendance at this first tryout, we will need to regroup and perhaps decide on a different plan. Of course, if we have enough players, we will continue as scheduled.

Our tryout registration numbers currently indicate that we should be able to field BB teams at these age groups.

REMINDER: If you have not yet registered for tryouts, please do so today! And please reach out to all of your friends/teammates to remind them to do the same!

WMHA is accepting nominations for Executive positions. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any association and WMHA is no different. Please consider volunteering your time at the Executive level to grow the game we all love in Woolwich.

The following positions are open for nominations:
Vice-President Of Player Development
Vice - President of Local League
Vice-President, U9 & Below
Treasurer
Secretary
Directors (up to 10)
To qualify for these positions, the following requirements must be met:
Vice-Presidents - must have served at least 2 years on the Executive OR Local League Convenor OR Representative Coach (or in some combination of the above)
Directors - must reside within the Woolwich Minor Hockey catchment area
Executive members are expected attend monthly meetings and be involved in a variety of committees to assist in the operation of the Association (averaging 20+ hours per month).
