Bringing home a new puppy? Focus on engagement before obedience.

During your puppy’s first 24 hours at home, your goal isn’t to test what they know; it’s to start building a relationship. Use your voice, movement, body language, and energy to encourage your puppy to pay attention and choose to interact with you.

The more value your puppy sees in engaging with you, the easier puppy training becomes. Before worrying about commands, focus on becoming the most interesting thing in your puppy’s environment.

Does your dog lose their mind when someone knocks at the door? 🚪✊

Simply telling your dog to “stop” or “quiet” doesn’t works because it doesn’t teach them what you actually want them to do, you’re just creating more noise. If you want to change the behaviour, you have to change the game.

At McCann Professional Dog Trainers, we don’t just manage door barking, we transform it into a trigger for voluntary focus. Instead of reacting to the sound, your dog learns that a knock at the door means it’s time to lock in for training because good things are coming if they do!

The Formula for a Calm Entryway:
1️⃣ Give Them a Job: We teach dogs to immediately head to a designated place, like their bed, the moment the doorbell rings.

2️⃣ Reward the Right Behavior: By heavily reinforcing the choice to stay on that bed, we build massive value for calm behavior.

3️⃣ Voluntary Focus: When staying on the bed becomes more rewarding than rushing the door, your dog will naturally choose to look to you for direction instead of reacting to the noise.

When you show your dog exactly what success looks like, making the right choice becomes the easiest thing for them to do. 🐾

If you need to take your puppy out for a nighttime potty break, keep it boring. 🥱

It’s tempting to give your puppy attention, cuddles, or a little playtime when they’re awake in the middle of the night, but that can accidentally teach them that waking up is rewarding.

Instead, keep nighttime potty breaks short and predictable. Head outside, give your puppy an opportunity to relieve themselves, and then calmly return them to their crate.

During the day, we build engagement and value. At night, we build calmness and routine. That’s what helps puppies learn that nighttime is for sleeping. 💤

Your puppys name should be a cue to stop whatever they are doing and get to you as fast as possible, not just background noise.

One of the biggest mistakes new puppy owners make is using their puppies name before they know it, resulting in it having no value over all the other words you say in a day. You want that word, that name to sound like an alarm over all the other noise and distractions.

Instead, start using a “nickname” for your puppy in everyday use cases and start building value for their actual name. You want your puppy to think and know that everytime they hear their name and come to you AMAZING things happen. Play, treats, reward - all the good things!

Want your puppy to pay more attention to you?

Before we start teaching cues and commands, we want to teach our puppies that staying connected with us is rewarding. That’s exactly what engagement games do.

By rewarding your puppy for choosing to follow, check in, and move with you, you’re building focus, confidence, and a stronger training foundation. The best part? Your puppy is learning that paying attention to you is their idea and not something they have to be constantly reminded to do.

Small games like this can have a big impact on everything from recall and loose leash walking to everyday life with your dog.

What if one command could stop your dog mid-chase?

Teaching your dog to lie down around distractions isn’t just a cool trick; it’s a valuable skill that can help you regain control when excitement is high. Whether it’s a squirrel, another dog, a toy, or something unexpected, a reliable down cue can give your dog a moment to think before they react, and could even help keep them out of trouble in an unsafe situation.

A reliable down is about more than obedience; it’s about impulse control when it matters most 💙

Want a reliable “Drop It” cue? Start teaching it before your puppy picks up something important.

Using a simple trade game helps your puppy learn that giving things up doesn’t have to be a bad thing. By trading for a reward, you’re building value for the behaviour and teaching your puppy that listening to you pays off.

The more you practise with toys and other low-stakes items, the more prepared you’ll be when your puppy finds something they shouldn’t have. Train the skill before you need it, and you’ll have a much easier time when real-life distractions show up.

Too much freedom, too soon, is one of the easiest ways to create long term unwanted problems.

When puppies are left unsupervised, they often practice behaviours we don’t want like chewing, accidents in the house, counter-surfing, and other habits that can become harder to change later if allowed early on.

At McCann Dogs, we focus on setting puppies up for success. Active supervision allows you to guide good choices, prevent mistakes, and teach the rules of your home from day one.
