Forty plus years later, I have come to the conclusion that this game is like no other, in that it demands the unparalleled union of the whole self... one shot at a time. Renee Powell is a historic professional golfer who broke major racial barriers as the second African-American woman ever to play on the LPGA Tour, making her debut in 1967. Following in the footsteps of Althea Gibson, Powell competed in more than 250 professional tournaments globally during her tour career from 1967 to 1980.

In 1967, Renee Powell became only the second Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour, following Althea Gibson by just a few years. She played through a decade defined by hostility she should never have had to face: hotels that wouldn't host her, tournaments that barred her outright, and slurs shouted from galleries meant to intimidate her off the course.

Powell kept playing. She competed on tour for 13 seasons, then went on to become a respected golf instructor and, later, an honorary member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, one of the sport's highest honors and a recognition of a lifetime spent growing the game.

Her family's course in Ohio, Clearview Golf Club, built by her father William Powell after he was denied membership elsewhere because of his race, remains the only golf course in America designed, built, owned, and operated by a Black American. It's now a National Historic Site.

Class act, well done Ryan Fox… and Congratulations on your win!

As Ryan Fox stormed to victory at Royal Birkdale, fellow Kiwi Lydia Ko felt like she couldn't breathe.

"I was crying," Ko told Fox when the two New Zealand stars caught up on the phone after his Open Championship win.

Ko answered with: "Hello, Champion Golfer of the Year," while pumping her fist in celebration.

What stood out most was how often Fox made sure Ko's achievements were mentioned alongside his own.

Several times after winning, Fox was told he was joining Bob Charles and Michael Campbell as New Zealand major champions. Each time, he was quick to add:

"And Dame Lydia Ko, who has three of them."

Fox believes his victory can have a huge impact on golf in New Zealand, a country that continues to produce world-class talent despite its size.

"Dame Lydia Ko has won, what, three majors and she's not even 30 yet. It's pretty crazy."

A classy gesture from Fox, making sure one of New Zealand's greatest golfers got her flowers while he celebrated the biggest win of his career. 🇳🇿🏆

Clairey Lin ensured that the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship title will remain in Canadian hands after defeating Amelie Zalsman 5 and 4 after 32 holes in the final to win the 77th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship on Saturday at the Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C.

Semifinals: W, 1-up
Finals (36 holes): W, 5&4
 
The 16-year-old Lin is the second-straight Canadian to take the title after Aphrodite Deng’s win last year and the first stroke play medallist to prevail since Rose Zhang in 2021.

With the win, Lin secures spots in this year and next year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur and next year’s U.S. Women’s Open.
