In the past couple of weeks, the Duncan Stingrays hosted two exciting competitions at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre: our Vancouver Island Regional (VIR) Level Up #2 and Orange & Black II 🧡🖤

The VIR Level Up #2 provided a welcoming, low-pressure racing opportunity for swimmers who are newer to the sport, while also allowing developing and experienced athletes to practice race skills in a structured meet setting. We welcomed teams from across Vancouver Island for this meet! While the meet was unfortunately cut short due to a large-scale power outage that required us to evacuate the facility. Beyond strokes and turns, swimming teaches many lessons! This lesson was about adaptability and composure through the occasional “what now?” moment 😁

The Orange & Black II brought the entire club together for our in-house meet, offering swimmers across all groups the opportunity to apply what they’ve been working on in training. For many swimmers, this was their very first competition, an important milestone in their swimming journey! Learning how a meet runs, managing nerves, stepping up to the blocks, and finishing that first race are experiences that build lots of confidence. Everyone should be extremely proud!

One particularly special moment over these meets was getting to see Bruce, a longtime Stingrays coach and our Head Coach from 1984–1996, race. While he’s certainly raced many times before, this was everyone’s first time seeing him step up and compete! It was a powerful reminder that swimming is one of those unique sports you can continue for decades 😁 always challenging yourself, always learning, always improving and always part of the team.

A heartfelt thank you to Bruce for his long-term dedication to the Stingrays and the many generations of swimmers he has impacted! At this meet, you definitely encouraged us all to continually challenge ourselves and to keep stepping outside of our comfort zones.

A huge thank you to all the swimmers, coaches, officials, volunteers, families, and visiting clubs who brought such great energy, sportsmanship, and community spirit! 🧡🖤

Some of our senior swimmers rocking custom cap eyebrows before heading off to represent the Stingrays at the 2025 Richmond FastSwim Classic this weekend. It’s exciting to see all the hard work from the fall come together at the end of the season. Good luck Stingrays!

This past weekend, the Stingrays hosted the 2025 Annual Winter Break Invitational! We were thrilled to welcome teams from across Vancouver Island, from Comox to Victoria! The weekend was filled with fast racing, fun relays, and an awesome team atmosphere on deck. Congratulations to all the swimmers on their phenomenal performances.

A special highlight from the meet: Kendra S. was presented with her SNC Level 4 Officials pin by her mentor Brian B. 👏
An incredible achievement. The last Stingrays official to reach this level was Al Wilkinson, who went on to achieve SNC Master Official status. A proud moment for our club.

Also, thank you to everyone who also contributed non-perishable food and toiletries in support of the Cowichan Valley Basket Society!

A huge thank you to all the swimmers, coaches, officials, volunteers, families, and visiting clubs who brought such great energy, sportsmanship, and community spirit!🧡🖤

Congrats to Bill O'Toole, the first recipient of the Kevin Thorburn Coaching Excellence Award! This award is made possible through the generosity of Summer McIntosh to honour the legacy of her longtime mentor, Kevin Thorburn, celebrating coaches who carry forward his philosophy: belief in athletes, devotion to the craft, and the courage to pursue world-class performance.

This last weekend, Gabi W traveled to Markham, Ontario to represent the Duncan Stingrays at the Ken DemChuk Para International Invitational. She achieved personal bests in the majority of her races and made finals in all her events!

The chance to race beside Team Canada swimmers and form new friendships along the way made this competition especially inspiring. It was also a valuable learning opportunity for Coach Sophie, contributing to her ongoing professional development.

We are so proud of you, Gabi!

Today was the first Orange and Black meet of the year, our in-house event where Stingrays of all ages come together to race and show what they’ve been working on. From our youngest racers to our masters swimmers, the progress from the first two months of training was clear in every race. We’re proud of every Stingray who stepped up today and loved seeing so many smiling faces!

Always a highlight having Desirae Ridenour back on deck with the Stingrays. A Stingray since age five and still on our record board, she’s coming off an incredible season highlighted by her first World Cup win in Napier, New Zealand. She joined our A and D groups for fast 100 IMs and 50s, and everyone put in great work to match her energy. Thank you Desirae!
