We are saddened to learn of the passing of Joy Thoms, of Windermere Pekingese fame. Joy was a passionate devotee of the breed and a bred exceptional Pekingese in all colours but whites were her true passion. She worked tirelessly to produce whites that were equal to the very best of any color. Wherever you are in the world, if you see a quality white, you can be sure that there is Windermere in the pedigree.

So much discussion/statements online lately about the correct head of a Pekingese.
What are your feelings? Can we post dogs that are still alive/available in the gene-pool that are correct or are we attempting to educate judges with dogs that no longer exist and examples that will never be seen?
Globally we have declining numbers- what can we do to save breed type?

In profile, a Pekingese’s face is flat, but head on, the skull is wider than deep. There is a unique descriptive for this appearance of the head and, to our knowledge, among the many AKC breed standards, the Pekingese standard is the only one to use the word “envelope.” Specifically, the large, short‑muzzled head is described as a wider‑than‑long, “envelope‑shaped” rectangle.

This “envelope” characterization is widely attributed to the late Mrs. Beatrice H. Godsol, a California sheep breeder who became one of the early women assigned to judge Best in Show at Westminster, and who, together with her husband, is counted among the very small number of husband‑and‑wife pairs to have judged Best in Show there. It was she, it is believed, who vividly likened the desired Pekingese head to a “number ten envelope.”

Nigel Aubrey Jones, author of The New Pekingese, observed that “the Pekingese head is the stamp of the breed and no matter how wonderfully conformed a Pekingese is or how typically it moves, without a good enough head, its progress will be minimal.” A massive, broad, and flat topskull between the ears; an undershot and broad lower jaw; a flat, broad muzzle; a shallow forehead; and the wrinkles that separate upper and lower areas of the face are all hallmarks of this singular headpiece.

We close with another well‑known saying widely attributed to Mrs. Godsol, one that has little to do with the topic but is worth remembering: “All dogs have faults, but the great ones wear them well.”

The Royal Kennel Club has today announced an expansion of its Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS), in partnership with the University of Cambridge, extending the scheme to a further 14 breeds.

This evidence-led progression follows the publication of a new peer‑reviewed research paper, funded by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT), evaluating the prevalence and severity of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) using the existing RFG methodology.

From 5-7 March 2026 at Crufts, free RFG testing will be available on a walk‑up basis in the relevant breed halls, with no advance booking required.

The additional breeds included are: Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dogue de Bordeaux, Griffon Bruxellois, Japanese Chin, King Charles Spaniel, Maltese, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

So important that we reach veterinarians & veterinary students

On March 17, 2025, Dr. Jenn Woods, CKC Ambassador and OFA-approved Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) examiner, along with Laura Grandmont, PEI representative for the Advocacy Committee, had the privilege of presenting to students at the Atlantic Veterinary College - AVC, University of Prince Edward Island! 🐶🙌

During the session, they shared insights on CKC’s advocacy efforts and initiatives aimed at promoting the health of all breeds, including brachycephalic breeds, and the importance of the RFGS. The students were excited and eager to get involved in future initiatives supporting breed health.

We’re thrilled about future opportunities to collaborate with AVC and other veterinary colleges across Canada to promote the health and well-being of all dogs! 🐕✨
