Hellooooooo
Been a year or so since I have been on here. Took a while for me to figure out how to get back in.
Had a good spring season. The weather was colder and much drier than normal - so we really struggled getting the baits started. Once they took off, we did pretty good. Had 12 hunters, 10 kills = saw an average of 6 bears per hunter. Should have a couple that will make B&C (at least P&Y).
Have been baiting for over 2 weeks now. All baits have been hit the last 2 checks. Have lost several buckets and have had a couple of others smashed to peices. Hope this continues and we will have a good fall hunt.

Hello
Spring hunt is long over, and we are suffering thru the dog days of summer.
I had said that this should be a pretty good spring - and, overall, it was. We had 7 hunters, they hunted for 28 days, saw 70 bears and killed 5, wounded 1.
Only one person did not have an opportunity, but he did see 4 bears. We used the bait that he was on, for 1 of the next group of hunters. That person saw 16 bears, and was charged by a big male twice when he was walking into his stand (archer). He also saw a large female with 3 yearlings on the bait and 2 smaller males. Yes, he killed!
Our weather did not co-operate for the first few weeks of the hunt. It stayed cold most of the time and we had no rain to get the grass and buds growing. After 3 days of rain and some hot weather, the bears really started to move.
I did not see a lot of bears while I was baiting - but some nice ones after the weather changed. I also saw a real rare bear. It was a real red one - not a 'cinnamon' or reddish brown, but a fairly bright red. I had a guy with me when it stood on the road in front of us (about 50 yards away), and I asked him what color you called that and he said "bright red". A few days later a trapper friend of mine called and asked me if I had seen it - so he is there and he is RED. The MNR was doing hair sampling in that area and they said they had some hairs that were very red colored. Yes, he is real, and he will make someone a very special trophy if they can get him.

Hello Again
Checked all baits yesterday (will go again tomorrow). Did not see any bears - saw a nice young buck and a fat porcupine. Did not see any bear p**p on the roads, nor a single bear track. 80% of the baits were hit (no doubts in our minds that they were bear hits - handles broken off, tree branches broken and hanging nails bent). What a strange year!!! We have 5 times more bait stations already working well - than we have clients coming........so if you are interested - we do have room. Take care. Hello Again
Miracles - I'm on.
What a spring and early summer. We are chugging along right into our fall hunt.
Had a very successful spring hunt - 100% opportunity and 100% kill. All the bears were above average size, with one maybe making book ......it will be close when he gets it scored.
Don't have many booked for this fall - but I think we will have a great hunt. There is not much out there for natural food this summer, so I expect that the baits will really start to be hit.
Have some hunters booked for next spring, and am sold out for 2019.
We haven't been seeing lots of bears, but the ones we have seen have been well above average, and have had great looking coats.
Also not seeing any tracks on the bush roads like in most years - tells me they sitting pretty tight in areas that they find food, and not wasting a lot of energy searching out new food sources or just roaming around. Has been very hot and sultry latly - that might also be a factor in them not moving much. Will try to get online much more in the next few days. Take care all. SID

Hello Again
I know.....it has been a long time since I have been on - but spring is coming and I will be back in the bush again, and will have some pics. to show. Didn't do much trap lining this winter - heart wasn't up to it and I managed to catch pneumonia in mid Oct....... feeling better now and really looking forward to spring and the bear hunt.
Some of you may already know that MNR has decided to quota all outfitters taking US hunters. I have an area that can handle over 50 hunters - and I never have overharvested my area - but they have set my quota at 17 hunters. That is not 17 kills - 17 hunters total for the year. SO.........
For those of you who have already told me they are coming this year for sure .... Christie, Shauntel (plus your groups)- you have a spot at the price I quoted you. For any others - I will take hunters as I get their names and addresses on my computer - so book now if you want to hunt with me this year. We will probably only have a spring season, and most likely only in the Dryden area (north area roads are still washed out, but I am trying to work with MNR on getting permits to fix them myself). I already have other outfitters calling me to let them use some of my C of A' s ...... so I will only wait so long to fill up. I am going to book (if I can still get in) a booth at the Sioux Falls Sport show -( Mar. 9-12 I think).
I will hold last years prices until Feb 16th, after which date they will go up. (My area charge will be $150/hunter, gas is up to approx. 4.25/.gal US. and it is harder to find good help than it is hen's teeth up here (Russ and Bud and Fred were pretty good, but they may not be able to work as much as I may need them). C'est la vie!!!
I aws talking to MNR a few days ago and one guy said he had looked up my stats for last year and several preceeding years. Said that I was one of the top (if not the top) camps in Ont. in size of bears, and number of bears seen per hunter. They are supposed to be sending me the info (stats) on last years hunts.....still waiting.
If anyone has any pics I can use - please send them up.

Hello All
Sorry for being so long in getting back to this page. Have had lots of medical issues - but hoping we are finished with most of them.
Finished the fall hunt - pretty good - all of our tags were filled with a mix of sizes. I sat on one bait and watched a nice sow and yearling for an hour one night.
Not sure exactly where we will be hunting next spring, - all areas are up for consideration, but there are still some road washouts that may keep us out of some areas. Will let you know what areas are possible later.
Had surgery to remove some cancer from my back in early Sept. Was successful, but got a very severe infection. The meds for the infection affected my blood thinner meds - causing a pair of mild strokes (possibly called T.I.A.s), peeing blood for several days, blood coming from areas where blood vessels are close to surface (eyes, nose). Docs here wanted me to talk about a heart transplant, but the specialist in Thunder Bay says I'm too old. Went for my blood monitoring a few days ago and the nurses 'bout tied me up and wheeled me over to the ER where they said I had pneumonia.
It has been fun alright!!!
But I feel pretty good - just anxious to get onto the trapline.
Does anyone have some free time and a flatdeck trailer? I have a walk-in freezer in a barn just south of Red Wing Mn. that has to be moved out by Fri. eve. (I have to go to Thunder Bay tomorrow to have my defibulator checked out and have to see the nurse here on Fri. to get my back checked and repacked, and blood monitored)I will pay $300 0r give a 1/2 price bear hunt
to anyone who can pick it up for me and store it for a week or two - until I get Dr. clearance to go down for it (Hopefully the first week of Nov.) My phone # is 807-223-6465 if anyone is available.

Hello
Fall hunt is moving onward. We have had 1 hunter in - hunted 2 days, saw 8 and killed ave. size bear. He would have enjoyed it more if he wasn't the only 1 in camp. Have another single coming Fri., then a group of 3 on Sept. 4. Have another outfitter using some of my baits.
We checked baits 2 days ago and all were hit except for where we had killed 2 days earlier. Lots of scratches and p**p around almost every bait. Have seen some nice bears while I was baiting this fall. Will be back out again tomorrow (had to see the surgeon today - might have skin cancer and she wants to do a biopsy soon - so didn't have time today). Got a pic of a yrlng a few days ago, but it didn't come out very clear. He was with a huge sow, and he shot up a big poplar tree - so high that his next step would have been onto a cloud. Hello Again
Here are a few of the photos taken by Steve, of a smaller bear on one of the stands. The live one is not the bear he shot. (taken on another bait)
In pic #1 the bear is coming to the bait (he stayed for 3 hours). Next pic bear says "OOPS, climbed wrong tree". Pic #3 he figures it out, then knocks the bucket down and has lunch. Will try to post more tomorrow.

Here are the pics from our trip into North camp. Fishing was great - 25 min. to both limits, plus we lost several and threw some back. You can see several of the washouts (or starting washouts).

Hello Again
I know - it's been too long since i've been here. I have been pretty busy. Have had several trips to hospitals and Dr.s offices and ssn some specialists - lots of running around,....but we changed my meds (hospital in Thunder Bay said "no change" to the heart (still 87% damaged and still pumping at about 25%), so I figured it must be the meds I'm on. Changed some of them .....and feel 100% better!!
Went up north to see if we could get into north camp yesterday. The original way is washed out badly, about 8 miles from the camp. Need a chopper to get thru that mess now. The other way - up the Jones Road from Kenora was passible. You could see where they had just repaird two large washouts, but we did get thru. It was pretty rough from north of the blacktop on, and there was one place on the Portal Rd. that is close to caving in.... but I think I can still get a camper up there. I have some pics that I want to post, but don't know how to get them from the camera to this page. Will try to get some help and get them up ASAP. Oh yeah..... we fished for 25 min. to get our limit of 8 walleys - all between 16.5 and 18.1 inches. Threw back a smaller one, and lost several. Great day on the water!!
There was some bear crap on the roads - but not as much as I had expected. That could be because there were no ripe berries of any kind that we could find, and there were no mushrooms out either.
So......if we get 10 reservations within the next 5 days, we will use north camp this year, otherwise I will continue with baiting south of Dryden on the Dore Lake Rd. for this year.
