The Memorial Arena is ready for action! Take a peek at the behind-the-scenes process of how the ice is made for a smooth season operationally.
The preparation of arena ice is much more complex than flooding the rink and waiting for it to freeze over time. In the Valley, there are multiple steps coordinated at the Drumheller Memorial Arena to prepare the ice for use.
It starts with reducing the arena's temperature then clearing away dust followed by thin sheets of water being directly sprayed. Over the course of a week, enough layers are added that the sheet can then be painted white! Contractors have special equipment that spray even layers of white paint then once dry, stenciling and detailed line painting are applied to the surface. To top it off, another few layers of water are added to give the overall polished, striking look.
Thanks to Platt Ice Contracting for making our rink ready for the 20th year in a row!
