Orthometria...

About two months ago, I lost the charger for my Oura ring while travelling. Not the ring, the charger. I haven't worn my ring since. I've been OK!

We named orthorexia when the pursuit of "clean eating" curdled into obsession. We named orthosomnia when chasing the perfect sleep score started wrecking people's actual sleep.

So here's a word: orthometria - the obsession with correct measurement of the self.

It isn't in any textbook. I'm half-coining it. But it signals something real, and I think a lot of us know it, but feel compelled to do it because... well, I'm not convinced we even know why!

Orthometria is the compulsion to measure. The ring on your finger, the patch on your arm, the score from some proprietary algorithm. The steps, the streaks, the accomplishments, the perfect readiness score. We've wired ourselves to a hundred devices, and somewhere along the way, the dashboard stopped serving life, and life started serving the dashboard.

The cost? Well, the more we monitor, the more fragile we become. Every metric is a way to fall short, and we begin to distrust how we actually feel in favour of how the device says we should feel. Maybe there's a metric worth protecting, life... the one that nothing can track.

In my opinion, life is worth living without the obsession of having an imperfect device tell you how you're feeling!
