Today, September 30, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.
Today is a time to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour Survivors and their families, and acknowledge the lasting and ongoing impacts of the residential school system on First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
Truth comes before reconciliation. That means listening to Indigenous voices and Survivors, learning about the history and legacy of residential schools, acknowledging the harms of the past and present, and recognizing the responsibility we all have to contribute to meaningful change.
Reconciliation is not a single day or a finished process. It asks us to continue learning, listening, reflecting, and taking action throughout the year while respecting the leadership, knowledge, cultures and self-determination of Indigenous Peoples.
Today, we remember. We listen. We commit to continuing the work.
