5 Focus Areas to Keep Your Horse Comfortable and Support a Healthy Musculoskeletal System

Your horse’s comfort, movement, and performance depend on a body that is balanced, strong, and flexible. Paying attention to these five key areas can help keep your horse feeling their best and reduce the risk of injury.

1. Be Passionate About Posture
Good posture and body symmetry help distribute weight and movement evenly throughout your horse’s body. The moment we sit in the saddle, we influence our horse’s balance and movement. That’s why it’s important to do everything we can to support healthy posture and minimize strain on joints and soft tissues.

2. Strengthen the Core Muscles
A strong core helps protect your horse’s back and body from injury while supporting better posture and overall performance. Core strength allows your horse to move more efficiently, with greater balance, power, and expression.

3. Support Lateral Stability
Strong stabilizing muscles help your horse stay balanced when turning, moving sideways, or traveling across uneven ground. These muscles play a vital role in protecting the limbs from twisting injuries and maintaining overall stability.

4. Encourage Healthy Joint Mobility
Regular movement through a full range of motion keeps joints healthy and functioning properly. This stimulates the surrounding structures—ligaments, tendons, muscles, and fascia—and helps produce synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints.

5. Maintain Suppleness and Flexibility
Suppleness is about more than flexible muscles. For your horse to move freely, all body structures must stay healthy, mobile, hydrated, and well-lubricated. Stretching and mobility exercises help maintain flexibility, support the range of motion, and keep your horse comfortable and injury-free.
