Just letting you know that this group page will be shut down soon.

Well the days of maintaining the oval are now over for this season, warming weather is not conducive to keeping natural ice. Hope everyone who skated on the oval enjoyed the time spent. Looking forward to next winter and a new oval.

Heading down to oval soon to resurface the ice for our Thursday speed skating practice.

01/16/2023

Well great time on the ice yesterday, high humidity makes the temperature feel colder than it really is. Due to the small size of the club and the fact that competitions are just starting to gear up again, we’re not spending as much time resurfacing the ice as we would in a normal year. Nor is the ice as big it’s only a third of the width of a competition track.

In the past we had skating training on the oval almost daily so the Ice was regularly resurfaced. Now we have to factor in the high cost of fueling and maintaining the equipment versus the need for daily practice sessions. As we do not have a big crew of long track skaters this year a couple sessions a week is good.

Really hoping the cost of fuel and parts such as Zamboni blades and sweeper brush cassettes come down in cost for next season. We are currently a small club and money is tight.

I love having the public having access to the ice during non practice times. Just remember small club limited funds so once the money runs out the ice goes away, treat the ice with respect and that way we can afford to keep it in for use by us all.

If the weather gets above 0 degrees than the ice is softer so be extra gentle on the skating, other wise the ice gets badly gouged up which takes maintenance times from an hour to several hours, which means a few less days of time until funding runs out and the ice maintenance goes away.

Currently the club has practises on the oval Thursday evening from 5:30 to 9:30 and Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 5:00.

Hopefully we can extend the ice lifetime through the month of February for some warm winter skating. I enjoy working on the ice and giving the public somewhere to skate outdoors just like I did as a child. Just don’t feel enthused about people who want to be jerks and abuse the situation just for some inner need to be destructive and end up being self destructive to themselves as well.

I still want the public families to ge able to bring their young children down to learn to skate with the freedom that big ice gives us, to push our boundaries, to enjoy life , have fun with friends and to grow in a meaningful and fun way.

Hope to see you there enjoying the ice and having the childlike fun of just skating for the pure joy of it.

Yours Ron Cartier.

Speed skaters we’re on the oval ice today, be there at 1:00 for the 1:30 practice session. It will be warm but if the sun gets out it will be gorgeous, bring sun glasses in case. Going blind from looking at the sun reflecting off the ice is not fun.

The first day of flooding and building ice for the outdoor oval has commenced, had to wait a few extra days to get an operator freed up from city snow removal. So should be on the ice this December for skating.

Well winter is here and soon we will be building this seasons oval. This is a three week process. Then laying out all the dots and lines to make it competition ready.

Once again this is of course a Dawson creek speedskating club built and operated facility. The city of Dawson creek helps us out with water for the track but does not operate or control the facility.

So to the public we like to see folks use but not abuse the ice, as all the maintenance costs are born solely by our club. Anyone damaging the ice or buildings will be prosecuted so that we can recoup repair costs.

So if you value the facility and like to be able to use the ice, then respect the ice, we really don’t want to go all legal on folks so be on good behaviour. If you want to see a big high quality outdoor ice surface we need the public to have access to then support us by not damaging the ice.

We are a small club and funds are limited, if it becomes too expensive to maintain we may have to curtail oval making for ever. And then the public loses, I have had the pleasure of seeing moms out with they’re young children in mornings helping them learn to skate, it’s a skating for free concept which I totally love, it gives us a chance to not only better out club but make life better and cheaper for folks who can’t afford to spend money on public skating, or organized sport.

Ice practices happen after school and a couple of evenings. Actual times will be posted, these practices are for club members and invited guests only due to the insurance policy.

So here’s a return to a fully operational oval in quite some time.

More information to follow.

Well Tyron is surveying our oval layout, then it will be time to start flooding and building the long track oval. The city is no longer supplying water so good local companies are helping out. More on this later we will supply a list of our local companies helping us out.

The oval is built and operated by the Dawson creek speed skating club, and as a small club we need locals to not abuse the oval ice. Any and all practice times are for club members only per insurance requirements.

The public is welcome once again to use the ice when we are not using it for club functions however Any persons doing malicious damage to buildings or the ice will be charged and prosecuted in civil court.

Cleaning the oval ice, going to hit +1 at noon today snows supposed to stop at around 10am. So if you would like to skate come down around 1 today the ice will be clean and freshly flooded, not sure how much longer we can keep the ice so this may be the last oval skate.

Wow warm but insanely windy, gusts up to 80 kph. I can see drooping the kids off to skate then having to drive to pouce coupe to pick them up. Needless to say it would be very tough for a skater on the oval today.

Weathers looking real good for this Thursday practice, some of group 3 coming to skate at 2:30 so if any one wants to skate early come on down the club practice starts around 6-6:30 temps around-4 -5. Looking forward to everyone coming out and enjoying the warm weather again.

Very cold this week unfortunately, next week the temperature is starting to climb, Thursday looks good and Saturday better. The week after that we are up to -4 temps so that’s fantastic. Anyone who wants to skate after school please contact me and I’ll have everything including the warmup shack ready for you. We can also add a Sunday day skate to make up for lost practices next week, if anyone wants.
