Hello Dawson and arena users .

With another season underway at the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre, we're excited to welcome everyone back to the rink!

As activities get underway, we'd like to remind everyone of a few important rules to help keep our facility safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all users.

NEW THIS SEASON – No Wheeled Skate Guards!
- For the safety of all facility users and the public, wheeled skate guards (roller guards) are no longer permitted in the Recreation Centre.
- We've experienced a number of collisions and near misses involving roller guards in the facility. To help prevent injuries and keep our shared spaces safe, this rule applies to all wheeled skate guards.
- Regular skate guards are still welcome. Keep your speeding on the ice!

Helmets & Safety Equipment
- Helmets are mandatory for all hockey activities, including shinny and sticks & skates.
- Players 17 and under must wear face shields during hockey activities.
- Helmets are required for all users 17 and under whenever they're on the ice.

Other Important Reminders
- Children 9 and under must be accompanied and actively supervised by someone at least 12 years old.
- No stick play in hallways or change rooms.
- Please remove personal equipment from the facility each night.
- Treat fellow users, staff, and our shared community spaces with respect.

Our full rink rules are included in this post. We encourage everyone to take a moment to review them.

Thanks for helping us keep the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre a safe and welcoming place for everyone. We're looking forward to another great season on the ice!

Dawson City, you've heard it here first. Opening date for the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre is scheduled for Monday, October 19. All leagues are expected to be starting next week. A full schedule will be released in the upcoming days.

A huge thanks to our ice making and facility maintenance crews who have been putting in overtime to install the ice and get things ready for some of our favourite winter pursuits. We're blessed to have a number of returning and dedicated staff members who you'll see throughout the winter. Please join us in thanking them for their work!

2026-27 plans are coming to fruition, but we know it will include:

- Multiple skating and hockey programs - stay tuned here for details on skating and figure skating programs.

- 4 hockey leagues, including Dawson City Minor Hockey, Klondike Ice Queens, Dawson City Community Hockey League, and Klondike Hockey League. Follow their pages for more information about individual schedules and plans

- Food at the concession from La Hockeria - follow La Taqueria Dawson City for more information on openings and menu

- Numerous community events and tournaments. Including our fun glow skates, and the 5th annual year-end Mini Puck.

- For anyone looking for information about curling. Please follow Dawson City Curling Club - their ice is expected to be ready for use shortly as well.

Here's some photos of our ice crew painting and installing lines and logos. Shout out to John Musick for the images. It's looking great.

We still have some last minute preparations to do, but can't wait to see you there next week!

MIDNIGHT DOME TRAIL WORK COMPLETE & SLIDE TRAIL UPGRADES

A few weeks ago, before the white stuff fell, we wrapped up a few significant improvements to Dawson's trail network.

Midnight Dome Trail
Work is now complete on a new hiking-focused trail connecting Dawson to the Midnight Dome!

This is a significant addition to Dawson’s trail network, creating a more accessible, grade-friendly route to one of our community’s most iconic viewpoints. Construction took place over two seasons and was completed by local contractor Transition Industries.

The new trail is approximately 3 km long, connecting the Acklen Ditch to the Midnight Dome. It was constructed with a grade of approximately 10% or less and enough width to comfortably accommodate users walking side-by-side.

The trail completes a continuous route from Dawson to the Dome through the Ninth Avenue Trail, Crocus Bluff, the currently named Buried Treasure Trail, and the new Midnight Dome Trail. New signage is also being installed to make the route easy to follow.

We expect this new connection to significantly change how people move through and enjoy Dawson’s trail network in both summer and winter.

This project was made possible with financial support from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and Yukon Community Services. We sincerely thank both governments for their support.

MOOSEHIDE SLIDE TRAIL UPGRADES
We’re also pleased to highlight improvements completed along the Slide Trail.

Work included modest widening, brushing and groundwork to improve the northern end of the Dome trail network and create a safer and more enjoyable experience for users. This work was also completed by Transition Industries and is a fantastic improvement to this section of trail.

As the trail no longer provides access to Moosehide Village, we plan to eventually rename this section Nankak Zhu, connecting it with the existing Nankak Zhu trail leading to the Acklen Ditch and the new Midnight Dome Trail.

This work was also supported by the Government of Canada and Government of Yukon. We appreciate their continued investment in recreational infrastructure for our community.

Over the past 10 years, the City has successfully implemented many components of our Trail Management Plan. There is still work to do, but we’re proud of the trail network that has been developed and hope residents and visitors enjoy these latest improvements.
