A new piece has found its way into the journal:

The Shape of a Slow Holiday

This one began with a few ordinary days close to home.

Rain.
Tea on the deck.
Quiet roads.
A lake that did not need the weather to be perfect.
A picnic in the car.
The kind of day that gives enough
without needing to become more.

It became a reflection on the softer shape a holiday can take when we stop asking it to prove itself.

Not every beautiful day is flawless.
Not every meaningful holiday needs to be full.
Sometimes rest arrives through small things, slow mornings, cloudy skies, and the quiet permission to let the day be what it is.

It’s there if you’d like to read.

After a summer rain,
the yard seems to hold
a different kind of quiet.

The grass darkens.
Leaves shine at their edges.
The deck boards carry
that damp, earthy smell
that rises when heat
meets rain.

Even the air feels changed
for a little while.

Cooler.
Greener.
Closer.

There is a small kind of relief
in the world after rain—
as if everything has had
a moment to drink,
to pause,
to begin again.

What ordinary summer moment
has been asking
for your attention lately?

A small question for this part of the season:

What kind of ease
are you most drawn to lately?

Morning coffee outside
or evening tea on the step?

A walk after supper
or a quiet hour at home?

Hands in the garden
or feet in the grass?

Music through an open window
or the sound of birds nearby?

A full day of puttering
or one beautiful thing
left unfinished?

There is no right answer.

Only small clues
about what the season
may be offering you.

Which one feels closest
to what you need?

The first few meals outside
always seem to change
the feeling of supper.

Nothing fancy.

A plate balanced on your lap.
A glass sweating in the sun.
The smell of something
on the barbecue.
A chair turned toward
the last warmth of the day.

Even an ordinary meal
can feel different
when it is carried outside.

A little slower.
A little less contained.
A little closer
to the season.

What ordinary thing
starts to feel different
when you bring it outside?

A question for the season:

What do you want
to leave more room for
as the days grow longer?

Maybe it is more time outside.
More unhurried meals.
More walks after supper.
More space between plans.
More evenings that do not need
to become productive.
More noticing.
More wandering.
More ordinary beauty
woven into the day.

It does not have to be a big answer.

Sometimes the season begins
with one small permission.

A little more room
for what makes you feel
like yourself again.

Lately,
more of the day
has been finding its way outside.

Coffee on the step.
Watering flowers in the morning.
Bare feet in tthe grass.
The sound of lawnmowers
somewhere down the street.
A chair pulled into the sun
for just a few minutes longer.

The season starts to stretch
the edges of ordinary life.

Meals taste different outside.
Evenings last a little longer.
Small chores begin to feel
less like tasks
and more like a way
of being near the day.

What small part of your life
has started moving outside again?

Before the week closes,
maybe choose one small thing
to leave room for.

A slow breakfast.
A walk with no purpose.
Sitting outside for ten minutes.
Getting your hands in the dirt.
Reading a few pages before bed.
Making Sunday simpler.
Leaving one errand for another day.
Letting the first hour of the morning
belong to something gentle.

Nothing that needs to become
another task.

Just one small place
where the weekend can breathe.

Which one feels most needed?

Something new is beginning quietly at The Balanced Soul.

This fall, I’ll be sending the first issue of The Seasonal Letter — a quiet note shared four times a year with seasonal reflections, everyday magic, gentle practices, and studio notes.

It is less of a typical newsletter
and more of a small seasonal pause.

A place for reflection.
A little ordinary beauty.
A few words to carry with you
as the season turns.

The first autumn letter will be shared in September.

If you’d like to receive it, you can sign up here:

May it feel like a quiet note arriving at just the right time.
