Canoe/Kayak
At Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club we offer programs for beginners (ages 5 – 15) as well as those who have honed their skills and train as elite or high performance athletes. We offer lessons in both Canoe and Kayak for recreational and competitive levels. We offer a Dragon Boat program & a Masters program in the evenings. The Summer Day Camps act as a continuation of the Atom Program with afternoon session in Dragon Boat, Games, Outings, Swimming, etc. This program offers convenient drop off and pick up times for those who wish to register for a Full Day Camp. Some of the boats used for the Paddling Program are:
C-1 (Canoe for one person) K-1 (Kayak for one person)
C-2 (Canoe for two people) K-2 (Kayak for two people)
C-4 (Canoe for four peopel) K-4 (Kayak for four people)
C-15 (Canoe for fifteen – also known as the “WAR CANOE”
A “BUN” is a round bag filled with cork to kneel on while you are in the Canoes. A “SINGLET” is a jersey that represents our club and must be worn at all regattas. As part of our program we have a built in swimming lesson for younger athletes up to Level 10. There is a Life guard and a Swimming Instructor on duty daily throughout the summer program. This year we have a new deck area on the beach to offer some sun protection along with an area for a picnic table. Generally there are two or more regattas held each summer for each age group of paddlers. It is not mandatory to participate in the regattas although we encourage the atheltes to do so and be part of a team. A few of these regattas are not held on Lake Banook but on surrounding lakes in the area such as Bell Lake, Lake Echo and Kearney Lake. Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club not only offers great recreational programs, but we also offer an exquisite rental experience. Whether you are planning a wedding, a reception, a retirement party, meetings or corporate days, we are here to serve you. With access to the balcony over looking picturesque Lake Banook, the Aquatic Room provides a beautiful location for any event. This large, smoke-free, air-conditioned room offers excellent full-service options. The room features seating for up to 350 guests for functions where there is no food requirement (no tables). The maximum seating for the Aquatic room with food requirement (tables) is 250 persons. We have some very exciting news, we recently became wheelchair accessible in our Aquatic room! Our Matheson Room sits on the top floor of our facility and accommodates up to 100 people. This room provides a wonderful view of the surrounding area and overlooks Lake Banook. The Matheson room is a perfect space for small wedding receptions, meetings, retirement and birthday parties, or any reason to simply get together. Whatever your special event, Mic Mac AAC is prepared to work with you to make it a memorable one. We offer a full range of first class services at reasonable prices. History of Mic Mac AAC
Mic Mac A.A.C. was established in 1923 known then as “The Mic Mac Aquatic Club”. An energetic group of Dartmouth citizens pooled their resources for the development of aquatic sports on Lake Banook and before long the small boat house was created. During the early years the club membership was comprised of men only and there was a heavy emphasis of the social aspect of the facility. A desire to socialize and a common love of sports united the membership and sparked a commitment to the development of competitors. At this time rowing was the main aquatic sport, although the club rented small non-motorized, watercraft to people interested in the aquatic environment. In 1932 Mic Mac A.A.C. sent Frank Courtney, Fraser Herman, Gordon Gammon, and Henry Pelham to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games to compete for Canada in the men’s four rowing event. Shortly after that in 1935 Mic Mac was the first to send an 8 oared shell onto the Lakes of Dartmouth. The practice of renting watercraft continued until the late 1940’s at which point paddling began to grow as part of regular club activities. During that period a more formal paddling program was created and the club became the only club on the lake to offer both rowing and paddling programs, a claim still valid today. Mic Mac A.A.C. was the first club in Nova Scotia to join the Canadian Canoe Association and played an integral role in the establishment of C.C.A divisional status for the Maritimes. In 1956, Mic Mac A.A.C. paddlers, Jack Flinn, Lawerence Murphy, Henry Mosher and Deitreich Schroeder, captured the gold in C-4 competition at the C.C.A. championships. This was the first time a national championship title in paddling went to a team east of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, and the first of many national championship medals to be awarded to Mic Mac A.A.C.
