Banook Canoe Club

Banook Canoe Club Banook Canoe Club is a competitive and recreational sprint canoe kayak club. Your cottage in the city

The word Banook comes from the Mi’kmaq word Panuk meaning “First Lake”. The Mi’kmaq were the first to navigate Lake Banook and the Dartmouth lake system as they traveled across the Province. The waterway system from their winter home in Shubenacadie, led them to their summer home along the shores of the Dartmouth lakes and the body of water that is now Halifax Harbour. The lakes were also ideally

situated for the military at the time - providing the ability to move supplies from inland communities to Halifax. Thus, in 1826, the construction of the Shubenacadie canal began which would open up the waterway to transport goods through the interior of the province and leading to the Bay of Fundy. By the late 1800's, canoe clubs were appearing all over Canada and the United States. The lakes of Dartmouth seemed to be a natural spot for the sport. At the same time, the William English Canoe Company hired Arthur Weston. He was a member of the RedCaps Snowshoe Club and an accomplished rower and canoeist. With four other canoeists, he engaged them in the idea of creating a space for paddlers to store their canoes. They decided to build a boathouse on the “First Lake.” Their first meeting was held in 1903. Later that year, they incorporated the Banook Canoe Club Limited and thus the club of today was formed. Since it’s beginning, the Banook Canoe Club has had a deep history with the Dartmouth Natal Day celebrations. The first celebration which the club hosted was in 1904 - just one year after its incorporation! Funded by the Dartmouth Ferry Commission and the Town Council of Dartmouth, the day’s events included ball games, regattas and a concert. Natal Day regattas continue to be a part of the life of the lake and the club. The history of the club is much more extensive than what is outlined here. For a more detailed account, the book, “Banook Canoe Club: voices from our past” by Allan Billard, provides a much broader picture and an interesting read!

We were so excited to welcome back to Banook Canoe Club - Andrew Paris - Inclusion Consultant and Sport & Recreation Lead, Government of Nova Scotia.

Andrew shared his amazing presentation “Creating an Inclusive Environment” with our summer youth staff and some of our Board Members.

Can you believe it? This is the 5th summer that Andrew has joined us to share his experiences, his wisdom, his passion, and his knowledge‼️🧩

We learned about equity, privilege, bias, and allyship. And we talked about some real-life scenarios that might be encountered over the summer and how to respond for a positive outcome.

Thank you Andrew () for your valuable insight, lessons, and reminders.

Your session was especially valuable this season. We have just reopened our 122- year old club after our revitalization project - making our club an accessible facility. And this summer, we are offering our new Paddle All program as well as continuing to partner with multiple community organizations - opening Banook’s doors to a wider community and continuing the work to make Banook more inclusive.

Banook Canoe Club is proud to announce the grand opening of its revitalized facility on May 30, 2026.

After three years of construction and years of planning, the club welcomed nearly 200 guests to celebrate this milestone. The project was made possible through the support of donors, volunteers, members, community partners and all levels of government.

Founded in 1903, Banook has been a cornerstone of Dartmouth for over 120 years. The new facility will help us continue supporting athletes at every level, hosting competitions, and serving as a gathering place for the community on Lake Banook.

We thank everyone who contributed to preserving and renewing this historic club for future generations.

ADCKC Trials Day 2 | May 24, 2026 | Lake Banook

Another great day on the water, mainly calm in the morning, with a growing headwind throughout the afternoon. The winter training, hard work, discipline, coaching, and support were evident all weekend. Again with only 3 referee boats on the water but was able to capture a few shots to help remember this year's Trials.

Stand by for a few crew boats coming soon...
