Higgins School of Highland Dance

Higgins School of Highland Dance HSHD has been operating in Dartmouth since 2009 under the direction of Kathleen Higgins. We offer cl She continues to train and compete in Irish dancing.

Kathleen has been dancing since the age of 16 when she began as an Irish dancer at Halifax Dance. In her second year she began Highland dance under the instruction of Ruth Thurston at Highland at Heart School of Dance as a means of helping technique for Irish dancing. She discontinued Irish after 3 years to persue Highland full time. In 2008 Kathleen reached the Premier level (the highest level of

competition) and in the same year competed in the Nova Scotia Closed Championships where she won 4th Runner Up. In June she was invited to participate in the Canadian Inter-Provincial Championships as a Representative of Nova Scotia. Later in 2008 she won 1st Runner Up at the Atlantic Canadian Open Championships in Sackville, New Brunswick. Kathleen has competed and performed across Canada, in Cuba in 2004 and 2010, Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2005 and in 2011 competed in the North American Championships. Kathleen has performed with several different groups aside from Highland at Heart School of Dance including Scotia Spirit, Katherine Robinson's Highland Dancers, and Celtica Highland Dancers. In November 2009 Kathleen took her Associates exam with the Scottish Dance Teacher's Alliance qualifying her as a certified teacher of Highland dance. This certification also allows HSHD's students to compete and partake in examinations. Kathleen is a graduate of Saint Mary's University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Irish Studies.

❄️RECITAL RESCHEDULED❄️

Due to the weather and number of dancers we have travelling in from outside of the city, we have made the decision to postpone our recital.

HOWEVER:

Something we’ve been considering and now seems like the perfect time to begin a new tradition: Join us in January for our first ever Women’s Christmas recital, Nollaig na mBan!

Nollaig na mBan is a Scottish and Irish tradition where women gather after Christmas and celebrate together. Traditionally celebrated on January 6th (not necessarily our recital date!) it marks the 12th day of Christmas and a day of rest and camaraderie after all of the festive baking and chores.

A tradition of self-care, we are going to adopt this as a new tradition for our holiday recitals moving forward. December is busy and stressful and exciting! We want our dancers and families to enjoy our recitals with as little stress as possible and Nollaig na mBan embodies exactly that; a time together after the chaos, to celebrate and enjoy, and something to look forward to when it starts to get dark after the holidays 🎄❄️

Date & location TBA.

**EDIT TO ADD: Rooted in Scottish and Irish tradition, “Women’s Christmas” inspired our reimagined recital, but the celebration belongs to everyone. We’re honoured to share this meaningful tradition with ALL of our dancers and families!**

So proud of HSHD alumn Robyn! She joins the ranks of several Higgins Alumni who are now inspiring the next generation of Highland dancers 💕

Meet ✨ Robyn ✨ Celtic Roots Dance Academy’s Highland Dance Director!

She will teaching our monthly pop up highland classes this fall and running our weekly program starting in January 2026.

Robyn began Highland Dancing at the age of 23 under the instruction of Kathleen Higgins in Dartmouth, NS. Quickly falling in love with the sport, what began as her recreational, once per week activity became a major part of her life. She then spent most weekends travelling to competitions with her fellow dancers and cheering on other adult beginner dancers.

She has had the opportunity to dance all over Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. In 2018, she travelled to Scotland with some fellow dancers and the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band from Ottawa. She danced at many notable locations such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and a private performance at Balmoral Castle for Her Majesty the Queen, among other members of the Royal Family.

In 2021, Robyn auditioned and was accepted to perform in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo (though had been unable to attend due to a personal scheduling conflict). The same year, Robyn earned her Associates teaching certificate with distinction with the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance.

When Robyn isn’t dancing, she is spending time with her husband and two children, reading and thrift store shopping!
