LSC - Lethbridge Soaring Club

LSC - Lethbridge Soaring Club We are a soaring club slinging gliders into the air with a winch at a world renowned mountain wave site.

We are a club of gliding and soaring enthusiasts with a mix of students, licensed pilots, and certified instructors who operate our two seat Grob Twin Astir T glider from the world class Cowley Glider Strip in Southern Alberta. We are also proud members of Freedom's Wings taking those with disabilities for inspirational flights. Come see the Rockies like you've never seen them before and take a flight with us, or join us and get to know them first hand !

Congratulations to Charles Petersen for receiving a Special Recognition Award at the recent Soaring Association of Canada AGM. He was instrumental in getting LSC our Grob glider that we still use for Freedom's Wings flights.

Rope breaks can happen at anytime. At Estrella, our standard emergency briefing is if it’s below 200ft agl, we go straight and avoid hard objects(trees, saguros, power poles etc). And if it’s above 200ft agl, we pitch for 60, pivot 180°, and point at a runway for a downwind landing. One of our students with an instructor onboard had a rope break at around 100ft. At that altitude it can appear that you have enough altitude to make your turn to return to the airport for a downwind landing. But this duo followed their briefing and made the safe decision to go straight and land out. It’s why we brief, because in the moment of an emergency, it’s very easy to lose your head and do something unsafe or disastrous. This is example of an emergency gone right. They landed out, avoided danger and were able to do another flight 30min later. The Estrella team retrieved the glider that evening. The glider sustained no damage, not even grass marks from the local foliage.

Great time at the Cowley Fall Camp for our LSC members, in spite of snow on the last weekend!

Here’s an aircraft you’ve probably never spotted during your visits to The Museum of Flight. If you look up at the ceiling in the T. A. Wilson Great Gallery, you’ll see it there, sailing above all the other aircraft in the room.

This is the Lamson L-106 Alcor. It’s a sailplane, meaning it doesn’t have engines and harnesses air currents to soar through the sky. Debuting in 1972, it was the first sailplane with a pressurized cockpit, meaning the pilot didn’t need to wear an oxygen mask at high altitude. It was also the first sailplane built in the United States to use composite materials.

Besides recreational flights by its builder, Robert Lamson, the Alcor was used to study the Chinook Arch, a turbulent weather phenomenon that occurs in the Canadian Rockies.

This glider is the only Alcor ever built. Check it out on your next visit!
