What an incredible night.
In a season full of ups and down, we finally found some success on the last race night of the year with the Northwest Sprint Tour.
What was supposed to be a two night race weekend, turned into a one night show due to rain. Between weather systems Friday night, we were able to get the track dry enough that we could get in some practice session. With a few changes to the setup during the week and a completely rebuilt front end, stew managed to put down some consistently fast lap times.
Saturday afternoon started much the same as the previous day. Once the track crew got the racing surface dry, stew positioned himself in the top three for speed in the practice sessions. He would then go on to qualify 5th overall out of 17 cars. With an eight car invert drawn, this would line us up in the 4th starting position for the $10,000 Neil Montgomery Memorial.
When the green flag dropped, stew made a few early passes to get into second place where he would run a number of laps while reeling in the leader. Just as he caught the leader and traffic, the yellow flag would fly for an incident involving the leader and a lapped car. Stew inherited the lead under caution and never looked back. Despite a late push by the 33j, Stewart was able to cross the line first and not only win the main event, but the Neil Montgomery Memorial and a cool $13,000.
What a moment to share together with stews family, all of our friends, and most importantly the sponsors that were present and helped to keep this car on the track all season. Many tears were shed, and lots of beers were consumed.
Of course none of this would be possible without some very key people. Randy Price . There has been no bigger support system for this race team than him. Between ordering parts, loaning shocks, and even unbolting headers nerf bars and panhard bar off his own car so we could get the car back together on a short turnaround. Although Randy didn’t have a car at the track this year, he kept this car on the track no doubt. So thank you Randy.
Rob Leighton. Another key contributor. Rob always stepped up to help whether it was loan of shocks, wheels and brake components, or just helping troubleshoot setup or issues with the car. He always made time for us. So again Rob, thank you, and congratulations to you and Jeff and your entire team for winning the NST championship.
To our sponsors who took a chance with a developing race program with very limited experience in winged sprint cars. Thank you for your contributions and support. We are forever grateful. We look forward to partnering with you all again next season.
And lastly, Stewart and Emily. Thank you for your commitment all season long. Whether it was road trips with the boys while mom stayed home with Hudson, or keeping our bellies full at the race track. The two of you were and will be instrumental in the success of this program. We are so happy to have turned this season around after our rough start, and end on such a high note.
One last thanks to the track photographers who captured this bittersweet moment for our team.
