Over the last couple years, some friends and I have been working on this project on the Tlatlos Headwall west of Sayward.

This season we sent and called it Whirlwind. Its an 8 pitch 11+, fully bolted alpine route. Its mostly sustained at 10- climbing with the crux being closely bolted for 10+ A0.
The steepness of the hanging valley below gives this route a surprising exposure for the route length, and pulling a roof on pitch 6 is sure to get your heart-rate up!
The climbing is quite varied with face, slab, crack and overhang. You will need to stem, jam, layback and heel hook.
If you are up to it, you should give it a go in late spring!
From the logistical side, this project took:
15 worker days on the wall (6 work days)
13 worker days on the trail (7 work days)
130 hangers and anchors
2 destroyed static ropes

The cost for hardware and ropes was a little over $1000 split between 4 of us, with $100 being donated from Van Isle Climbing last year.

$100 from this batch of stickers will be marked for the next project on Tlatlos

~Every sticker sold is another bolt bought~

That's it!
All merch is paid for, all donations sent.

This is the grand tally!
I want to thank everyone that helped support this project of mine! It wouldn't have been possible without the support of every single one of you.

By buying stickers, shirts and toques, you directly supported ALMOST EVERY CRAG ON THE ISLAND!!!

It's incredible, at about $7 for a bolt and hanger, together we raised enough to buy over 650 bolts! THATS POTENTIALLY 65 PITCHES!!
Just because a couple hundred of you bought a little sticker, or a T-shirt!
I've gotta give another huge thank you to the local businesses that joined, including almost every climbing gym on the Island!!
I wouldn't have made is past $500 without your help!
My partner as well was a huge support, not only did she keep me sane from the start. But it was actually her idea that I could make extra stickers and sell them. I just wanted a couple stickers for personal use in the beginning!
I'm saving the most important for last, but if it wasn't for the developers across the Island, this project would have been pointless! They probably wont ask for it, but they deserve your ongoing support. And so do the crags!

Please, go to trail building weekends, scrub a route, donate to the access or bolt fund. If 10% of climbers did just a little bit to support our crags, things would be noticeably different!

Have you ever climbed at Sansum Narrows?

๐Ÿ“ธ Mike Cardinal
This is one of the oldest crags on Vancouver Island and certainly has its fair share of history!

In recent years this conglomerate crag has fallen into a state of disrepair, with arguably the sketchiest approach outside of the alpine.

Thankfully, Mike has been spending much of his free time out there rebuilding stairs, fixing the trail, putting up new routes and retro bolting the old classics.

Did I mention it's South Facing and dries, very quickly?
