An infield error in the bottom of the seventh allowed Jason Woodside to score the winning run from third, as Team Martell defeated Team McGillis 12-11, on Thursday night at KGP.
The game began with an outburst of offence, with Team Martell jumping out to a 9-4 lead in the first inning. Team McGillis did not roll over, however, and battled back to tie the game at eleven, in the top of the seventh inning.
Perpetual starting pitcher, Jason Woodside, was handed the ball for Team Martell, while Chuck Wert got the nod for Team McGillis. Wert twirled three innings, but was relieved by Ben Herne, who was forced to make an early appearance, after Wert was struck in the solar plexus by a line shot, off of the bat of a Team Martell batter. X-rays were negative, and Wert is expected to make a full recovery. Attending physicians credited Wert's devout training regimen for his ability to escape serious injury, while another hospital official was overheard stating, "A lesser man would have been killed!"
Team Martell outfielder, Bryan Lamarche (pictured right), was re-activated off of the sixty-day DL and was reunited with long-time teammate, Lorne Taillon (pictured left). If you know the current whereabouts of either of these two men, please contact the CMFL.
The evening was punctuated by four homeruns off the bats of Team McGillis young guns, Jeff Laframboise (1), Jeff Piche (1), and Matt Sauve (2). Tests conducted after the game did not reveal any evidence of performance-enhancing drugs; however, they did yield an unusually high level of chicken wings.
The league's next game will take place on Thursday, August 21st. at KGP. Again, please note that game times for the remainder of the season have been changed to 7:00pm.
